The Tri-Cities and Beyond

There are lots of places on the web that'll tell you about established DC or Marvel canon. The purpose of this guide, however, is to give you an overview of the combined universe, as it's represented in the game. Nevertheless, welcome to Earth-626.

We have chosen to use three cities iconic within comic books. Gotham City, New York, and Metropolis. This is not because of the characters attached to them, but for the feel of the cities.

For those looking for RP where heroes are beloved and celebrated, Metropolis is your town. For those that want dark and gritty, Gotham's your go-to place. New York is sort of our middle ground, where the city in general has no defined bias but generally are not as happy about them as Metro, not as suspicious as Gotham.

In addition, the three cities serve as a good breakdown for the "level" of RP you're looking for. Street-level characters fit in great in Gotham. Our larger-than-life do well in Metropolis and the Big Apple; New York City is the "wildcard" our melting pot and middle ground. That doesn't mean that you can't have a street-level character in Metro though! These are just the generalities (and strongly suggested for thematic balance - please consider the impact your character could have on canon based locations).

Finally, though they are three cities, we don't want to lock your RP into any one place, where if you live in New York you have no reason to spend the several hours to get to Metropolis. The 'Tri-City Corridor' as it's known, is connected via high-speed maglev train so that Gotham north to New York or South to Metropolis is cheap, 30 minute train ride. Is it realistic? Not terribly, no. But this is comic books. Crazy stuff happens. Also, this is a game for RP, and we want to remove obstacles to that RP. Not create more by having isolated islands.

Gotham, New Jersey Top

The City of Yesteryear. A hive of villainy and crime, Gotham is protected by Batman, the Dark Knight himself, and the Bat Family. Across the bay from Metropolis, in New Jersey, Gotham couldn't be any more different. Dirty, dreary, and depressing, even the cityscape itself is stuck in the past, dominated by gothic architecture and foreboding statuary. The streets are dangerous in the daylight, and only become worse as that sunlight fades. Sadly, its decay is only hastened by the criminal element. Some heroes try to at least maintain the status-quo — the crime rate neither rising nor falling. But, if someone wishes to hide in plain sight and plan their villainy, Gotham City is the place to be. Here, too, is where super-humans displaying particularly strange or bizarre abilities find it hardest to fit in. If not met with outright hostility, the best they can expect is simmering distrust. In Gotham, some of the unbowed population (and many so-called heroes, too) may well take to the streets to drive off someone obviously not like them.

Metropolis, Delaware Top

The Big Apricot, the City of Tomorrow. The great seaport city the Earth's most power heroes and minds call home a wondrous on the rise city dominated by monolithic skyscrapers that put even New York City to shame. At the bottom of the corridor in Delaware, Metropolis is known for its soaring skyscrapers, peaceful citizens, and futuristic architecture. Crime is on the decline and public approval ratings for superheroes continue to climb. For the people of Metropolis, things couldn't be any better. Home to the JLA and its team of civic-minded heroes, the city seems to beckon those who want a better life with promises of equality, security, and peace. Many villains find it difficult to gain a foot-hold there. But for some? Challenge accepted!

New York, New York Top

New York. The Big Apple. The City That Never Sleeps. If Metropolis is the City of Tomorrow, and Gotham is the City of Yesterday, New York is the City of Today. Towering, gleaming examples of modern architecture are everywhere you turn. Home to near eight and a half million souls, it’s easy to become lost in the crowd—just another person on the street. While days are often bright and relatively safe, nights can be dark and dangerous. With a wide range of attitudes towards super-humans, the citizens of New York know life is better in Metropolis, but can see how lucky they are when they look at Gotham. Positioned at the top of the Tri-City Corridor, the city is a melting pot of culture. There, you might see things that Metropolis and Gotham never even dreamed of. The city council is often ambivalent at best to the plight of the super-humans within their city bounds — until, of course, those super-humans make a name for themselves. Then? All bets are off.

Mutant Town - New York, New York Top

Famous (and infamous) for hosting one of the largest concentrated populations of 'muties' in all of the United States and quite possibly the world. This collection of metahumans isn't just those hosting the X-Gene but many others who have found it easier to get by in a world rampant with a lack of understanding and fear for the unknown. The very real unknown.

For the most part, the world at large doesn't much differentiate between mutants, metas, or any other superiorly gifted human being. All the public really knows is that these folks can do things they can't. Weird things. Bizarre things. Down-right frightening things.
