Metro Mutant Dustup

April 25, 2015:

Jericho, Partisan, Rain and Oracle watch a police press conference in Metro where the MPD is unveiling new crimefighting tools. And are then interrupted by the Brotherhood.

Hell's Gate Police Precintct, Metropolis

The steps of the Metro PD Precinct in the Hell's Gate area have been done up for a conference complete with a stage and a very bulky covered item.

Fade In…

It's a fairly large crowd out here near the police station in Hell's Gate. Recent events overseas and - indeed - closer to home have pushed some interesting discussions. Metro is one of the more meta-friendly cities in the area, so the discussion here has been less about controlling Metahumans than supporting the ones that already help them - like Superman. And recently there's been a breakthrough. Two of them, actually. Which is why there's been a press conference called. One that Jericho Trent has heard might get interrupted by some people with ill intent. Ordinarily he'd just stream it and watch it remotely but because of the spike in activity, he's here, and he's alet a few other people know that he'd be on the outskirts. Watching.

"1-1, on scene. Will have overwatch in 5."The voice, well it's different. Younger, softer but the cadence is there at least. The young woman slips her backpack off, before opening up the window and taping a short section of fabric mesh to shade the window beyond. Unzipping that tacky rolling duffle bag, and taking a knee to get her kit ready. She's not having a good day, the Partisan that is. There was the whole like, drive halfway across the city thing after getting in a fight with a zombie the size of a bulldozer. Then all the regular complaints that come with changing bodies, but well at least she isn't short. Pausing to tie her hair back into a ponytail before dragging that SR-25 free and getting in position.

***

Well, Rain is one of the more reticent magic types. She generally does her best to stay seen as one of the normies, even if she has violet eyes. And a talking cat. Aaaaaand… And, okay, so some days it feels like some days it's a futile endeavour, but she tries. At least Metropolis' skies are far more friendly than the usual options (Rain hates pigeons. She hates them SO MUCH). She hovers nearby, likely towards the fringes of the audience. Captain sits on the back of the broom, sighing.

***

Jericho blinks at Partisan's new voice. Because while he knows she acquires them from time to time, it's always a bit jarring when she does. And usually he knows about them. This time… "Part… what happened?" He murmurs as he sips in closer to the platform. The Metropolis Police Chief takes the stage flanked by a pair of senior officers and the local SRD Watch Captain.

"Ladies and Gentlemen…" He starts. "For a long time now City Hall and my fellow law enforcement officers have watched criminals and threats to our city become more powerful and sophisticated. That we have been kept safe is largely thanks to the actions of heroes like Superman. However, recent events in France have poven that even the best heroes cannot be everywhere at once, nor is it right to ask them to defend us and be unwilling to take no measures for our own protection. That is why, today, I am pleased to announce a new partnership between private industry, the Metropolitan PD and the Metro SRD. Effective Immediately this new joint taskforce, formally known as Division Ten, will handle all metahuman response situations in the greater Metropolitan area. And they will be given new tools commensurate with this task. One of these tools I will show to you today: The Anomaly Scanner."

A covering is pulled off a pedastal revaling a large, chunky piece of tech. It's… huge. Doesn't look like it'd fit in anything smaller than a full sized van. "The Anomaly Scanner will provide our hometown heroes, our police and SRD with the information they need to make the hard decisions in the field. This device can detect anomalous biological energy signatures such as those generated by mutants, as well as heat, light and noise signatures consistent with conventional technology and analyize them. While the technology is far from perfect, it will be improved over time and even now will form a critical part in our information operations. Deployment among Division Ten units is set to begin tomorrow."

Jericho quirks an eyebrow. Interesting tech. He can see why someone might want it. "Oracle, got anything?" He hasn't seen Rain yet.

***

"A series of unfortunate events conspired to rob me of both my time and my patience, forcing me to exhibit a general disreguard for the personal property of others."Part replies, it's long form for "not now" of course. Quietly getting her rifle situated, before popping off those scope caps and "Also, whatever happened to unreasonable search and seizure? That motherfucker is making my fascist senses tingle, remind me I'm not here to cap that motherfucker please?"Sighing softly as she leans into the rifle and begins scanning the crowd.

***

At her consoles in the Clocktower in Gotham, Oracle monitors Hell's Gate in Metropolis. The video feeds from the area plus ''radio'' chatter scroll and scroll on the screens, the redhead's custom scanning scripts looking for information.

Frowning a little, Oracle brings up something that appears highlighted "It seems Jericho, there's a group incoming. From the South of your location. Getting the size now, but it looks big."

***

Rain is still on her broomstick, doing her best to be as subtle as one on a broomstick with an orange cat in a trenchcoat can be. The two blink, seeing the anomaly scan. Her mouth opens, closes. That tech is interesting, but also unnerving. "This seems like it could go badly…"

***

The limitations on it are also interesting. Conventional tech makes sense but it'll be hard to pick out of the background noise. And of course to scan for more advanced tech you have to know what it is and does - which means having people who understand it… which is hard. The mutant signature thing… well there are a fair number of mutants. Odd that they'd hone in on them. Perhaps it's just because they were a bit more easily studied? "Nine-eleven happened." Jericho murmurs into his radio connection. "Patriot Act. Worst well intentioned idea ever. Don't shoot him though. If for no other reason than it won't fix the problem."

The hacker turns to look south at the news. "Company coming Part. Oracle's reporting a large group. Oracle, any ID on them?" It won't be hard to get. They're all dressed in civilian clothes but you have to have nerves of steel and balls of brass to rob a police news conference with tech. About twenty people. Which might be enough to snatch the very large hunk of metal if they brought a truck or something. All armed of course.

But it seems a bit light. Also a bit… obvious. "O. Look for something else. Anything else. This feels like a distraction."

***

Partisan gently adjusts the straps to that rather minimalist checkrig, before cynching down her backpack oncemore. "1-1, I'm fangs out. No visual, will enguage once I've got line of sight. Do we know where they'll enter the plaza from?"Double checking her range finder, before dialing up the elevation and settling back down behind the gun. "Be aware, they may or may not have laser weaponry. Call it a hunch, alright?"

***

"No specific ID, Jericho. A mish mash really. All of them seem to have a criminal record though, either through arrests or simply being detained." Oracle scans her screens and watches the comms data, something catching her eye "They're already there, Jericho. In the crowd. The comms chatter indicates there's a number of them. Trying to make them out now."

***

This is definitely not good. The Patriot Act and all its friends have done their badness. But for now, Rain watches concerned, her cat in tow. "I don't know, Captain. This just feels excessive."

***

Jericho turns and looks about. In the crowd. They have plants. He can see the group coming in from the south. If they had people already…"

"Partisan. This isn't a grab. It's a hit. I've seen this methodology before. The group from the south is going to start trouble. And then a plant in the crowd is going to try to snatch or kill someone. Oracle. I need you to get a response here. Do whatever you have to do. Break their network. Spoof it. I don't care. But make the police evacuate the area." It's going to be bedlam, but Part'll be able to tell real fast who isn't running.

The group from the south approaches from Rain's direction. As they move up they fan out. Weapons come out. Some people notice and start to react but there'll be shooting in a moment before anyone really can. Jericho's already doubling back but it's Rain that'll be the closest to respond.

***

"1-1, I see nobody I recognize. I need a little movement to start sorting through the crowd, I don't have a shot on anyone up here."Part winces a touch, pulling down her balaclava and neatly getting a cigarette lit with one hand. "A flashbang or tear gas would really work wonders here, but I've got nothing from here unless you want me to start making guesses."

***

Battabattabatta. Captain does that high speed repeated paw bat that cats do oh so well. "Oh crap," Rain notices now that Captain has alerted her. Eat your heart out, alarm dogs. Captain is on the case! "Thaaaaaaaat's not good." She takes them lower, to find some cover behind a vehicle or something, as she's a giant target in the air. But once she gets down, it's time to newt the hell out of one of the armed sorts.

***

Oracle snorts at Jericho's request. Getting the place evacuated, is fairly easy for the Information Goddess. Gaining access to the Metro PD systems takes a few minutes, but once she's in, Oracle then issues a warning. All police in the area are directed to evacuate it, immediately and more police despatched to the locale forthwith.

"Done Jericho. You should see them evacuating now." Oracle watches the screens and the data feeds… making sure nothing else pops up.

***

There's actually a cry of alarm as two of the guys in front just suddenly… newt. Could it be the woman on the broom?

Probably. Rain finds suddenly that she's getting a lot of male attention. 7.62mm Male attention. It's absolutely shredding the car she just ducked behind. A moment later Jericho has produced a gun and he's moving clear of the crowd, firing as he goes. The gunfire sends everyone to the ground and then the police and SRD officers present spring into action at Oracle's remote urging, starting to move and herd people away. In the distance, sirens wail.

As folks start to move Part gets a birds eye view of what's going on. Two… wait, three figures are moving against the general flow of the crowd and toward where the people on the podium croched down. The Metro Police chief is directing action, resisting efforts to drag him off the stage.

Oracle can see that as well. And if she runs the identities she may be in for a surprise. The agents aren't HYDRA. They're known Brotherhood operatives. And they're more than human.

***

Partisan isn't prone to rushing things in the first place, and she sure as shit isn't going to start now. She looses a round, before immediately transitioning to her next target. Downrange, well one minute theres the expected chaos. Then 168 grains of knock-knocks on some poor fuck's skull, before taking his brain out to play in high velocity splatter. The fellow closest to him is just starting to turn, when a round ploughs through his front teeth and crumples to the ground with the back of his head blown to shreds. There comes no report of a rifle, only a muted and late sonic boom. No muzzle flash, no theatrical glint of a scope. No theres a sniper here, and she's not fucking around.

***

To be fair, Rain only newted the armed ones. And she's more than a little worried as the car is being shredded. Captain is going to find his own cover nearby. There's going to be a couple more newts while Rain scrambles to maintain some sort of cover. She doesn't even really pay attention to who else is being shot. She's just going to keep herself from being swarmed by bullets like she's wearing magnetic underpants and bra. Priority is GTFO.

***

"Well that's interesting" Oracle notices the newting too and cants her at what she's seeing. Running identities take a few minutes, she has clean up the visual before actually starting the scan. "And something else interesting, Jericho. They're Brotherhood. Guess HYDRA is getting a bit tired. Sending you data on each one."

***

The one that Partisan just shot was a telepath. So it's probably a good thing that she did that. The other two? Bruisers. One is a brick named 'Hardcase'. Hyperdense body structure and enhanced strength. As Part transitions he jumps up onto the stage. "For Mutantkind!" He bellows, getting Jericho's attention. Poor Rain. He had been about to help but the crap is absolutely about to hit the fan. Officers pour rounds into him but their smaller weapons just aren't cutting it.

The other operative, a woman, is named 'Wildcard'. She draws a blade and moves up the other side, aiming for a leathal flanking maneuver as Hardcase takes all the fire.

"Crap. Oracle, I've got a civi- wait, that's Rain! See if you can get her cell. And get her out of being pinned down." There has to be something Oracle can do, Jeri figures. Overload an electrical box near the shooters. Hell even turning on a fire alarm would probably get a lot of attention. "Part, I'm moving to engage near the stage." Two shots force Wildcard to evade and take cover.

Rain has… well, there are fewer people shooting at her now. Mostly because newts cant hold guns. Her cover isn't going to be cover much longer though.

***

Partisan switches targets with a slight wince, ashing her cigarette casually to one side before easing those mildots over Wildcard. "Bitch with a blade."Part announces over the radio, before she sweeps the trigger delicately through. Theres just a muffled crack on her end, downrange? Well it's well aimed and under 750 yards yeah this is no sweat for either the Part or that SR-25. "I'm tasking at will here 1-2, you have anything in particular you need or shall I continue mowing the grass here?"

***

"This really isn't helping your cause," Rain offers meekly. This is bad. So bad. So, so bad. "Why did I even do that." "Poor impulse control!" Captain offers helpfully. Rain does have a phone with her. She's got to do something. Rain has to help herself, if nothing else. Think Rain think. Maybe… she can try repairing the car with magic. Yes, let's hunker down and do that to buy herself some time.

***

The redhead in the Clocktower sends out a call to Rains phone. She has the number from the times Rain has been in Gotham. When Rain answers, she'll be greeted with "This is Oracle, Ii'm going to help you get out of there."

Accessing the city electricity grid, don't ask and Oracle won't tell, the wheel chair bound woman turns on everything she possibly can in the area, she's going to overload the grid and hopefully the substation near Rain and the shooters will explode.

***

The sudden surge of power floods the substation and, perhaps unexpectedly, sparks the nearby transformer overhead, raining hot spall down on the gunmen which shy away and try to move for cover. Rain's free, for the moment, thanks to Oracle.

Partisan's bullet impacts squarely catching the swordswoman off and she goes down… messilly. At roughly the same time Jericho sweeps Hardcase's feet out from under him with his sword. Bullets weren't doing any good but Jericho can split steel armor with his blade when his traces are powered up… which they are. The hacker drags the man off stage by his foot as the police chief is dragged clear. No one argues with the traced out man with the sword. Who would. "Part I'm going to need some place to contain this guy. I've a few questions for him. Like how the hell he knew what was going on here." The connection between the mutant scanner and the brotherhood attack seems to direct to ignore. As he talks Jericho is… well, there's several dull smaking sounds from the pommel of his blade.

"Oracle, I'm pulling out with a captive. Tell Rain to get clear. Do me a favor and route me a secure FTP site? I'm going to need it shortly and I won't have time to set it up myself." Rain gets a wave of acknowledgement. Good job, uh, distracting them, Rain. Now don't get arrested?

***

Narrows her gaze for a moment, before rising with a huff. "I'll bring the car around 1-2, you're about to lose your overwatch."and well out she goes into the hotel hallway. People stop and stare, and get flipped off for their trouble. Not that you can blame them, honestly. Like sincerely when was the last time you saw a, well like 18 year old girl who looks like she just got out prep school on the war path? Skull balaclava pulled up and aviators pulled down, SR-25 slung beside her backpack and free hand resting comfortably on the CZ on her hip. "ETA one minute 1-2, how copy?" Pausing at the end of the hallway to pop open the window and out she goes, dropping down into the alley beyond. Like seriously, it's the partisan people the fuck are you gonna do about it?

***

Holy combat, Batman. But Rain does pick up. "Hibeingshotatsorry. ThanksOracle." No time for breathing! Rain really does appreciate it. "Movingnow." She is going to wave back, scoop up her cat, and pause. "I hate teleporting. I always end up in drag." "TELEPORT, WOMAN. WE HAVE NO SHAME." Captain pawslaps her face. And the two will teleport away. Rain is just going to rue it and the day someone invented flannel.

***

Secure FTP Site … Oracle just smiles to herself and sets off one of her subroutines. It takes a few seconds and the details sent via Jerichos' secure channel "Details sent, Jericho. It's out of Switzerland, it will be secure."

"Excellent Rain, don't be a stranger. I'm sending secure comms details to your phone, whenever you're in Gotham, check in with me, OK?" The redhead does care about the safety of those she works with.
