Fade In…

Supposedly Spring is here, but today it has been rainy and was not a very nice day at all. However, as the afternoon becomes the evening, the rain has stopped and the streets have become livelier. It is Friday after all. No one cares if it is a little cool.

The Washington Square Park area has been flooded by college students, chess players and more than a few tourists. Looks like no one cares to remember about demon invasions or super-villain attacks. New Yorkers have become a resilient lot, or those who are not, have migrated to Metropolis. In any case things are pleasantly normal, for once.

Until there is a loud sound of screeching tires, and a grey van speeds up through the street, forcing many vehicles to hit the brakes and provoking indignant horning from irate drivers. The van looks a modern, menacing, armored thing, the black logo in the sides announcing: 'Sentinel Services'.

Lorna Dane was out trying to enjoy herself for once. She had lost a lot in the past year or so, and sunk into an obsessive depressive state as a result. The safety of those under her protection in Mutant Town was her sole priority. Any notions of changing the world for the better, of making a better life for her daughter were long since gone. Abandoned. Much like her marriage.

So it was a rare instance that the green haired woman was even seen outside of Mutant Town. It wasn't like she was a criminal, there was nothing she could be charged with at the moment at least.. But she was definitely a public figure. People knew her from her actions in Genosha nearly a year ago now. Since then though, she'd faded into the background if one hadn't followed Mutant Rights issues.

The coolness of the air wasn't an issue, a leather jacket solved that problem rather nicely and Lorna was simply enjoying the time to get a hot latte and find herself a new book to sit down and read for a little while. The sound of tires captured her attention for a brief moment, and she looked up from her position on a park bench with latte and book in either hand with a frown marring her features.

Jubilee is done with school on a Friday, which is a good time to go out into the city and have fun. Dressed casually, she takes a train out into the city. She's walking through the park on the way to some shops, when she hears the sounds. She whirls around, and happens to see Lorna and her green hair. Walking over and waving. "Hi!"

Someone is running through the park, startling the tourists, toppling over a chess table (strong of curses follow) and bumping against a hotdog stand, making a huge mess. He (he?) is large and covered in grey fur, wearing an oversized tracksuit and a blue hooded coat, now somewhat torn and stained with mustard.

The big odd-looking person stands up, panting, and stats running again. Not very fast, as now it is obvious he is also quite overweight. After him come two large, fit men, wearing tactical vests and helmets with the Sentinel Services logo. They are heavily armed, but their firearms remain holstered. Instead they carry simple police batons in their hands. "Halt!" Shouts one of them, "someone stop that mutant!"

No one seems to be willing to do it. It is not the mutant looks very threatening. Well, he is large. Close to 300 lbs. But for New York, that is not impressive. Still, just once, people seem to have the common sense to stay out of the way.

Until two more Sentinel Services agents appear in front of the mutant. Looks like they came out of the screeching tires' van, which must have been breaking traffic regulations to position the two men to intercept their target. One of the agents shoulder-tackles the mutant down, although he rebounds on impact and falls to the ground too, rolling away and getting up only slowly.

Lorna kept her eyes on the previously screeching van, her lips thinned into a line as she watched the chaos of the Sentinel Service agents taking off into the crowd in the park behind her. Still, she didn't move, not yet. At least, that hadn't been her intention until Jubilee came up to her and disturbed the line of thoughts that occupied her mind as she sat on the park bench. She uncrossed her legs, and took a long sip of her latte.

"Hey." She glanced side long at the woman beside her and then, without turning around fully toward the agents patted the bench beside her.

Jubilee smiles when noticed back, but then stuff happens. She sees a mutant being chased, and with a look at Lorna, and a deep breath, she decides to creat a distraction, waving her hand out, she sends a string of fireworks out, very bright, popping in front of the Sentinel Services men doing the chasing. Then she sets off running in the same direction as their target.

The grey mutant tries to stand, but receives a baton hit on his side, from behind, and stumbles down screaming in pain. "Leave me alone! I have not done anything wrong!" The four Sentinel Service agents surround him, and one of them pulls out a pair of oversized handcuffs.

There should be policemen in the park, but strangely none of them seems to be around right now.

The agent that hit the mutant leans back to help restrain the man, when Jubilee's fireworks go out, making the other agents fall back. One dives for cover, two others just stumble a in a daze, blinking and trying to pull out their weapons.

But not the first agent. He is the largest of them, a pale man with buzzcut hair and a scar in his face. He keeps the baton in his right hand and draws a .45 automatic without hesitation. Then starts shooting at Jubilee.

The Friday crowd explodes in screams and panic.

Lorna sighed as Jubilee didn't sit down. No, the other young woman just had to go and be flashy.. just like her powers. The green haired mutant tsk'ed under her breath, taking another sip of her latte as she finished it off. This was very simply, why she shouldn't try to have nice quiet time. The world never allowed it. She got up at the crack of Jubilee's fireworks and set her book down with a grimace twisting her lips.

A slow stride brought her more in view of the Sentinel Service agents and she watched as most of them fumbled with the restraints and one guy in particular drew his gun. She held up a hand, and even from this distance, reached out with her powers to redirect the aim of the gun. Turning the weapon toward a tree rather than a living, breathing person with a flick of her wrist.

Jubilee is being shot at! Well, at least it'll let the victim have a chance to try to get away, right! She reacts by jumping, grabbing a tree branch, and swinging to get a good jump, and change directions. She then reaches back, and fires more bright fireworks at the man with the gun, dazzling hin, she hopes. "Big guy, are you ok?" she chirps.

The Sentinel Services agents also seem surprised by the gunfire. "Agent Brown, what?" They are recovering quickly, though. The guy that dived down rolls back to his feet and tries to tackle Jubilee down. "Must be an accomplice!" He shouts.

"There are more mutants in the area," states the big guy. Jubilee's fireworks make him grunt, and he covers his eyes with a hand. "I felt something pulling from my hand." He looks around, but he is half-blind right now. "I'll bring the suspect to the transport," he decides, trying to grab the terrified grey-haired mutant.

The other two men move to help. One towards Jubilee 'damn muties' he mutters. The other with the large mutant. They have yet to see Lorna.

Lorna had had a plan, well, the outline of one.. before Jubilee had gone off to play hero. The green haired woman couldn't afford to get arrested and have a yet another hit on her record. It was chancy as it was, and getting thrown in jail or where ever Sentinel Services took her was problematic in the extreme. Given that there was no more gun fire, however, Lorna retreated, pressing back against a tree and putting it between her and the action on the other side more firmly.

Lorna let herself sink into her powers, aware of all the weapons on the agents as well as their general placement as she closed her eyes and lowered herself down to the ground, making herself a smaller target.

Jubilee isn't exactly a tactician. Or a planner at all. Blame the learning disability. She figures when the shots miss, its' because her plan worked. So, Hoping they're blended long enough, she runs TOWARD the mutants, and reaches out to him. "Hurry, come on, let's get you out of here. You kind of remind me of somene…". Trying to grab his hand and tug at him to help him up As she does though, her free hand spreads out, and each finger is firing more fireworks all around, making it hard to see iether of them until they're moving.

So, Hoping they're blended long enough, she runs TOWARD the mutant, but starts making some moves along the way. Grabbing the arm of one man grabbing at her, she uses his body to climb up, nad jump off of his shoulder, pushing her body to push one into the other, and reaches out to the mutant "Hurry, come on, let's get you out of here. You kind of remind me of somene…". A smirk tilted her lips upwards at the various hints of metal that she could feel below the particularly cold and cruel agent's exterior. Her eyes still shut as she focused on that agent and then promptly, with a twitch of her fingers on her lap, sent out an electro-magnetic burst of targeted energy. Meant to short circuit whatever internal processors that helped the man function. Not enough to completely disable the guy, but hopefully enough to give Jubilee and the poor helpless mutant a chance.

It was all she dared do openly, at least so far. With her powers else where, she tripped the street lamps, attempting to make them flicker ominously on and off all around the park.

If the other mutant was truly part wolf or some other canine, it could only help in their escape if it was darker out.

Jubilee fires a few more firworks to drive away the others. "Get out of here," she whines, exasperated. "Leave him alone. You're just picking on him because he's different." The big agent going after the big mutant though is at the center of attention. She winds up, and fires a more powerful explosive right at him, trying to confound him by his hearing this time. Non-lethal by default.

Agent Brown seems to be lounging to punch Jubilee when Lorna electromagnetic attack hits him, he shudders, and Jubilee's blast makes him fall on his back, forcing him to release the grey mutant. He seems stunned.

"Damnit… he is a drug pusher, kid. Hell, you are under arrest too!" Screams one of the others. They are somewhat clumsy due to all those fireworks, though. Easy to evade for the nimble Asian mutant.

But the other mutant is not responding her. Instead he is convulsing as if he was having an epileptic attack. Foaming from the mouth, chocking.

Lorna grimaced, keeping her position as she kept her powers snarled around the Cyborg as he flinched and released the mutant in his grip. It was minor, but if he tried something more brutal again, Lorna had her fingers on the proverbial trigger; ready and waiting to act again and give Jubilee the edge she needed to escape at least. The mutant on the ground however, that was a problem she couldn't fix. She had no medical prowess, no super strength to fly him out of there with. Nor was she willing to sacrifice the safety of others that depended on her in Mutant Town for one lone mutant… For them, she couldn't risk it. Not after the last attack that had killed so many. So she waited.

Jubilee does some dives and jumps after her move is somewhat of a success, getting away from the latest round of counterattacks. She looks around for Lorna, and if she manages to make eye contact, mouths "Call 911." Either way, she'll fire off more blinding fireworks, and comes around to gray man, wrapping her arms underneath his, and trying to drag him away…

No cop on sight in the middle of Manhattan? It is quite strange, particularly as the people has mostly ran away from the park. Except for a few fearless (or very dumb) folks taking pictures with the cellphones. But surely someone called 911 already.

The grey furred mutant, he can barely move, he is convulsing and chocking, flailing feebly. But the three standing Sentinel Services agents are finally reacting. They cover their eyes at the dazzling fireworks and attack Jubilee with the batons, one of them pulling a taser gun to try to hit her, too.

Agent Brown, still on the floor, is twitching in a weird way. His systems rebooting quickly.

There was no way Lorna was going to trust the human based 911 to stop what might otherwise be a 'legal' or at the very least, cleared under the table operation. At best, she'd be ignored. At worst… they'd sent back up. But things were going badly and if she didn't do more, Jubilee and the mutant on the ground might end up worse off. As the tear gas canister gets thrown toward the two, Lorna reaches out with her powers to shove it back toward the Sentinel Service agents and takes off toward the road, away from the chaos.

With her hands stretched out, a car flips on and the engines rev as the thing comes driving off the road into the park and straight toward the chaos, engine still running despite the squeal of tires and the alike..

It was an offer, an escape vehicle, ready to go. Stolen… but something to get Jubilee out of there.

Jubilee isn't even close to being able to do that. But she tries. She brings the guy closer, and closer. Looking at the car approaching, as she does her best to follow the plan. She's no leader, she's no planner, she's no mathematician. But she can follow instructions. The whole way she starts using concussive blasts to keep any chasers back, really starting to use the higher end of her fireworks. "Help me … get him up?" she squeaks to… wait, there's nobody in the car. Holding the mutant's head up, trying to keep him from choking, she hopes he can somehow get up.

Finally, police sirens are heard. Too late for the mutant, who dies in Jubilee's arms with a horrible gurgling gasp. Poisoned.

One of the Sentinel Services agents gets hit by his partner taser, much to the shock of both, and the third one stops trying to hit Jubilee to help out. They are quite blinded, anyway, so their efforts were fairly useless.

Not so Agent Brown. The large man stands up, snarls at Jubilee and reaches to grab the girl by the neck. He is far stronger than a normal human, and the first conclusive blast barely slows him down.

The approach of sirens signaled Lorna's choice to leave. It went against everything she should have stood for. Everything the X-men had taught her to do, to save others and protect those that couldn't help themselves. But she could feel the slowing of the mutant's nervous system. The spark of electro-static that meant he was alive in her mind's eye died with a last guttering breath.

She took off, fleeing from the scene to escape the park where the cops would no doubt be headed to. For good or ill. Her boots smacking against the ground with too soft movements as she lifted her weight into the air as she moved. Jubilee was on her own.

Jubilee frowns when the man is visibly dead. "I'm sorry," she whispers, but then she climbs into the car. Making sure it's still on, crawling into the driver's seat, yanking the doors closed. "I can't take you with me," she says quietly before putting the car in reverse, and getting away a little awkwardly. Then turning around and speeding off. Not sure where she's going. To the street. Away and around a corner to get enough time to get out and run.

Fortunately Jubilee is still faster than the damaged cyborg, so she rolls into the car and manages to avoid getting murdered. Although Agent Brown does shoot several times, missing her only because his eyes are still full of colorful spot.

The police arrive to find the car empty in an alleyway. Sentinel Services explains the mutant took an overdose of some drug when cornered. A tragedy, but what can they do. Agent Brown gets a negative report for using firearms in a crowded area, but nothing is done against him.

It is not called a murder. In fact not even the other Sentinel Service agents realized it was a murder. But the cyborg Sentinels are still out there, killing mutants.

They are more subtle now.
