Fade In…

It's been a while since Bobby was last at the school. He drives onto the grounds on a Yamaha cruiser and comes to a halt just past the gates to look around. As many times as he's come and gone, it doesn't seem to ever change. Putting the bike back into motion, he rides up to the main entrance and shuts it down.

*

The sun was warm outside, and a nice breeze swept through the yard, but for all that it was 'back to school' it didn't entirely feel like fall yet. As a result, Lorna stepped outside the mansion in a sleeveless dress. A soft blue colored cotton, that swept around her knees as she walked. A pair of heels clicked with each movement and a white hat, sunglasses and matching purse was slung over her arm.

The green haired woman paused at the sound of tires on pavement, coming around the corner to spot on Bobby Drake parking.

A blink, as she lowered her sunglasses and a smile bloomed over her features. "Bobby! Is that you?" She called as she came over, her pace picking up until she was standing just before him.

*

Bobby Drake climbs off the bike and pulls his helmet off, setting it down on the seat. Hearing his name, he turns and smiles when he sees who it is. "Hiya Lorna. Yeah, it's me. I think." He makes a show of patting his arms and chest and nods. "Yup, all here. How've you been?"

*

A faint exhalation of amusement escaped Lorna as she came up, checking him over once as he patted down his arms and chest. She rolled her eyes, shaking her head faintly in his direction. "That's a long story better served with drinks in hand. Have you seen the news at all in the last year?" She tilted her head considering Bobby with a raised eyebrow. "Or were you living under a rock while you were… where exactly? College? Party boat? Skiing in the Alps?" She teased lightly, her voice the same dry humor as it had been before. Though as she removed the sunglasses and tucked them away in her purse, he could see the shadows around her eyes that spoke of sleepless nights.

*

"Los Angeles." Bobby answers and shrugs a shoulder. "I've heard some news. Whether I've heard all the news I won't know till you say which you're talking about. But with a drink in hand sounds like a real good idea. Maybe even two."

*

Lorna flashed Bobby a grin, and waved a hand back toward the mansion proper. "We'll gave to go up to the staff lounge. Scott has been pretty much his usual wet blanket self about not drinking in front of the kiddos. Something something schools are for education.." She grinned again and made to head back into the air conditioned rooms of the mansion, glancing back over her shoulder toward him. "I'm assuming since you're on a bike that you don't have much in the way of bags that need to be unpacked.. yeah?" She waved the door open, dodging a few of the younger students that had come back recently for the fall term.

"You've missed… a lot.. actually.."

*

"Actually, I've got a room in Harlem I'm staying in." Bobby tells Lorna as he walks alongside her. "Been back a couple days now. I didn't want to assume it would be okay to show up and start unpacking just because I'm here again." He gives her a quick look and adds "That sounds bad."

*

[Logan returns from OOC Land.]

*

A sardonic chuckle followed, "Scott will tell you to move back in. He's been arguing with Rogue about her choice to move out. And he flat out refuses to acknowledge the idea that I might as well.." Her smile dropped momentarily. "Not that I've been back all that long." She led Bobby back up toward the stairs toward the faculty lounge area. Populated with a fridge that had a few cheaper adult beverages and soda cans. The good stuff was all carefully tucked away in various other rooms in the mansion. Typically under threat of death and punishment to whoever took it.

And since that typically came from Logan it was more or less respected…

Lorna grabbed two beers, holding one out in offer to Bobby as she popped the lid off her own. "So, do you want the good ish news that you've missed or the crazy bad news?"

*

"Not entirely sure I want to move back in, honestly." Bobby says. "I've gotten used to living on my own and coming and going whenever I want in a big city. The school's… safe. I don't think I need safe any more if you know what I mean." Taking the beer, he pops it open and takes a swig. When given the choice, he doesn't need to think. "Gimme the bad."

*

Lorna set her sunhat, and purse down as she flopped down into one of the couches in the room with a heavy sigh. "Scott wants everyone close to home. He's stressed and it's showing. I'm sure you've heard about the Registration acts getting traction? It looks likely that they'll pass in some form or another within the year. The DEO is feeding us shit missions or hiding things from Scott. His words, not mine." She sipped at her beer, her lips twisting.

"Mutant deaths are on the rise and so are violent crimes against mutants. Remy was just recently kidnapped by a mutant slaver ring. We think they might be former Genoshans trying to live their old lives. They've brought their tech over. Collars are getting popular. And Mutant Town is growing emptier by the day." She pursed her lips, swirling the contents of her can around in her hand idly.

"They're going to Genosha… and Magneto is likely to be voted president, unopposed there within the next few months. Hmm.. what else.."

*

Outside the staff lounge a pair of heavy footsteps can be heard slowly fading into existence and echoing down the hallway. After a few moments when it seems the thuds can't get any louder, a short ball of muscle and hair trudges by and immediately disappears again as the footsteps carry on down the hall. A moment later the steps halt. Then seem to approach again until Logan appears back in the doorway, this time peering inside the lounge.

"Look what th' cat dragged in," he rumbles as a grin tugs at the corners of his mouth. Glancing over to Lorna, he offers her a quick nod as he takes it upon himself to wander inside. "Thought I smelled beer," he says as he eyes the drinks in their hands. Stepping over to Bobby, Logan extends a hand to the young man and offers a firm shake, "Good to see you, kid."

Overhearing the subject of conversation, Logan is quick to hunt himself a beer and thumb it open with a glance to Lorna. "Hey darlin'."

*

"Yeah, I've been keeping tracking of the Registration stuff." Bobby says with a soft sigh. "And you can't go to a news website without seeing something about anti-mutant hate crimes. Honestly, I can't say I really blame anyone for going to Genosha the way things are headed. I don't agree with it but I can't blame them." The sound of thudding footfalls - calling them footsteps would be an understatement - gets him to look over and he smiles and clasps the hands when they're joined. "Hiya Logan."

*

Lorna didn't need the thumping footfalls to know it was Logan coming into the room or walking by. The man was alight to her senses as bright as day. After all, his skeleton was metal, and it sang in the halls as he approached. She waved a hand toward the fridge, leaning back in the couch as she peered back toward Logan with a smile as he came over. "Hey Logan." She glanced back toward Bobby, and shifted on the couch faintly.

"Trying to catch Bobby up on everything he's missed in the past year. It's been a lot." She exhaled a breath, and took a sip of her own drink.

"Well, lets see.. Pietro and Wanda, if you heard, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.. are running the Brotherhood Magneto left. They've been blowing up Trask's labs and facilities. We've also been dealing with some groups of Purifiers that have tried to make empowered humans somehow. They also sent a fake Brotherhood of hopped up dead bodies to attack us a few months ago. I guess they were hoping we'd start fighting the Brotherhood." She shook her head, biting back a frown, though her eyebrows furrowed.

"Mansion has been attacked at least three.." She paused, taking a moment to count. "Demon Bear attack.. Space Sharks, Malice.. fake-Brotherhood.. space creature things.. At least five times. Since last year.."

*

Logan isn't the sentimental type, but he'd be hard pressed to deny he isn't happy on some level to see Bobby around here again. If it weren't for all the bullshit going on in the world it might even feel like old times again. Alas.

His gaze turning to Lorna as she goes into the history of the past year, Logan simply leans back against the wall and folds one arm over his chest and uses the other to hold the beer close to his lips. A lot of folks around here are feelin' the same way as Bobby although they wouldn't admit it. Logan has always been his own man and being around the mansion in times like these has become increasingly difficult. Sometimes things need to happen and the X-Men are a little too wholesome for it. They're good people and he doesn't blame 'em for it. But sometimes, well, things just need to happen. The recent operation to rescue Remy is a perfect example. He can't abide that happening to anyone else. And hearing Lorna dig up the five attacks on the mansion in the past year isn't helping. He's only been back a few months but he's feelin' the need to disappear again. This time it won't be to the Canadian wilderness.

*

"Five times?" Bobby asks, sounding surprised. Maybe a little shocked. "Sounds like we need to move. I wouldn't call the school safe any more if all the bad guys know where it is. Someplace in Canada, maybe. Canadians are as crazy as Americans." Mostly. Reaching up, he runs a hand over his hair. "Damn it. I like being in the city but if the place is attacked, I need to be here."

*

+MEET: Remy LeBeau has arrived via +meet.

*

Lorna inclined her head, "Yeah, I think that's why Scott wants to keep people close to home. With Registration and our enemies hitting us this past year? It's just as much protection for us as it is for the students.. It's why I haven't left yet. Though I'd very much like to. I'd prefer to be close to Mutant Town to help out down there. And I've stuck around here.. well.. I have my own personal issues.." She exhaled a breath, her expression drawing pinched as she brushed her hand through her hair and bit her lower lip.

She cleared her throat, and took another sip of her drink. "I'm pretty much publicly out as a mutant these days. Thanks to my work in Genosha and everything.. Magneto putting me on the Council over there.." She grimaced, "I'm sure you saw the news about my wedding being destroyed over there. People died.." She dropped her gaze and her jaw creaked with the pressure she exerted on.

"I've had a rough year you could say."

*

Listening to Lorna recount the events, especially her wedding, draws a slight grimace across Logan's weathered face. He already looks angry and it only makes it worse. Lifting the beer to his mouth, he pours a hefty amount down his throat and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, shoving off the wall to step across the room.

He begins to almost pace back and forth, although slowly. He doesn't want to alarm the others with his mind digging through the rescue op, tracking down some of the former Genoshan scientists, and the general atmosphere of the past many months.

Finally he glances back over at Bobby and his expression manages to soften enough to wipe away the feral look, "Yer free to make yer own choice, but it'd be good to have ya back. We could use you 'round here." Not one to talk considering his past, but if the Institute is going to survive it needs more people like Bobby around. He's someone the others can look up to.

*

Bobby Drake nods slowly at what Lorna says, his expression clearly sympathetic. "Yeah, I heard." he says quietly. "I'm sorry you had to go through that. I wish I could have been there." Logan gets a nod before he looks back to Lorna. "Speaking of being publicly out, I owe you an apology. You and a bunch of girls, actually. Back when we dated? And half the time it seemed like I wasn't really into it?" Or more than half. "It's because I wasn't. I'm into guys, not girls. I just wasn't ready to admit it. So umm, sorry about that."

*

Lorna made a sound of protest at the back of her throat, "Bobby, don't apologize for not being there. It's not your fault.. besides most of the X-men didn't attend on principle.. it was in Genosha after all, and my father turned it into another PR move.." She exhaled a breath, her brows furrowing as Bobby paused and continued on about needing to apologize. She blinked, sitting back and ready to protest that he was fine, that he didn't need to apologize for anything..

And she blinked. Once. Twice. She sat, up and then back. Thinking. "You know.. Bobby, I sort of think a part of me always knew that on some level. Probably why I dated you after Alex and I broke up.. You were safe." She smiled weakly, and tucked her hair back behind her ears.

"You don't have to apologize.."

*

When the conversation turns personal between Bobby and Lorna, Logan decides to stay out of it and walks back over to the fridge to grab up another beer. He tugs the fridge open and grabs a couple, nudging the door shut with his foot before turning and trudging over to the table in front of the couch. Keeping one for himself, he places a few more down on the table in case anyone else needs one. Based on the conversation he figures there may be a need for more.

He pops open his second and takes a long drink and walks back behind the couch, not wanting to intrude further.

*

"Might not need to but I wanted to. Using people is wrong, no matter the reason. Anyway, that's in the past and we need to think about the future." Nodding his thanks to Logan, Bobby finishes his beer and grabs a second one. "I guess I will move back here if the place is getting attacked so often. But I'm serious when I said the Prof should find another place. The students are obviously not safe here."

*

Lorna glanced up toward Logan as he returned with more beers, and she offered a wane smile, still nursing her first one. "Thanks Logan." Green eyes shifted back toward Bobby and she shook her head slightly. "No, the Mansion is still one of the safest places for the students. Mutants have been attacked all over. Picked off by law enforcement and with registration? A lot of them don't have anywhere else to go. We've got safehouses set up all over.. and we've been trying to get those that don't want to come here off the streets.." She pinched the bridge of her nose.

"I agree with Scott our defensive security measures are still better than most." She grimaced, and finished off her beer. "I just disagree with how we're going about fighting against everything else. Registration is coming, no matter what else we've tried. We need to get ready for the worst case scenarios.."

*

Nodding to the pair of them in return, Logan assumes a fly-on-the-wall position out of the way. But he does chime in, "We have the capability of protectin' ourselves an' the students so that ain't much of a concern." Echoing Lorna's sentiment, "We just gotta be proactive instead of lettin' them bring the fight to us." He bends his fingers, sending a few metallic cracks from his knuckles. "Sittin' around just waitin' to be hit ain't workin'." His brows furrow as he speaks, "We're too complacent. It's not doin' anyone good."

*

"The best defense is being somewhere no one knows to look." Bobby points out. "But yeah, if they do know, then here is better than anywhere else. That much is true. I'll go back tonight then bring my stuff here tomorrow." he decides. "It'll feel good taking the fight to them for a change. But is that something that Scott and the Prof will agree to?"

*

Lorna pursed her lips, glancing side long at Logan and slowly shaking her head. "We can't do that openly. Scott and Jean would never agree. It's too Brotherhood.. they're trying to make the school look like the 'good' mutants that you want to live next to. The kind that will work with the government and do all the paperwork. They believe it's important to try to follow the Professor's dream. That it can still be achieved." She reached for the second beer, frowning.

"I don't think my father's views are right—after all, he's been doing the same thing as my siblings for decades and registration is still coming. Neither side seems right to me. Either way, we have to be prepared for the worst." Green eyes flitted from Logan to Bobby and back.

"We need to build up connections and what we can while we still can."

*

"That leaves me out. I have no connections or contacts. And I so totally hate politics. Honestly, if it were up to me, I'd say just leave the US for a country that doesn't hate us." Bobby tells them. "Or doesn't hate us as much. Australia has a lot of open country, for instance. I bet Ororo could do wonders making a small part of it livable. And I can supply all the water we need." Once the ice melts. He shakes his head, knowing that's not going to happen. "I believe in the Prof's dream but it doesn't have to happen right here."

*

Lorna heaved a sigh, shaking her head. "There isn't a country out there that's sympathetic or not looking at passing similar laws. It's worse in other places." She pursed her lips, green eyes flickering back up to Bobby over the edge of the can in her hand.

"Why do you think I was working in Genosha beside Magneto? It was to make sure there was a country to take our kind when shit hit the fan.. I didn't think things would get so bad so quickly.. but.." She shrugged, trailing off as she set the beer can down. "It wasn't so I could get ice cream and fries with my father." She drawled, her chin propped up with both hands.

"I haven't even told you what Cable said.. he said ten years.. mutants are wiped out. Twenty and most of humanity in his future…"

*

"His future being the key words there." Bobby's quick to say. "Just be being here he's altered the timeline so it's all up in the air. Thinking something is preordained is just…" He shrugs and downs a large swallow of beer. "Nah, what happens is what we make happen. And speaking of Mags, why's he letting slavers come kidnap our people?"

*

Lorna arched a brow and shrugged, "Maybe, we don't know other than a lot of futures haven't been exactly promising…" She sighed and shook her head as Bobby continued onwards about what Magneto was up to.

"He's not. He tried to catch as many of them as he could, but when the X-men here and him.. took out the old regime, a lot of them got away. There were mutates to rescue and fighting against Sentinels and the Magistrates on the island. Nate died.. he came back .. but Bobby, it was bad." She grimaced, folding her arms as she sat back on the couch. "He's also stuck on Genosha.. second he moves the UN has threatened to strike. That was the deal.. he gets a country if he stays there."

*

"Then where are the slavers taking them?" Bobby asks. "That's something I could get behind; tracking them down and taking them out. And whoever is giving them help. Like Logan says, being proactive and hitting them first."

*

Lorna's lips twitched, "Don't let Scott hear you," She smiled as she picked up the beer again. "I've been doing just that with Logan, The Cuckoos, and Rogue now and then." She murmured, glancing around the room and back.

"You're not the only one having those feelings. But again.. Scott and Jean don't agree with it. They're staying loyal as they can to the Professor's dream. We've got an uphill battle here Bobby. Not openly doing what the Brotherhood is up to.. and not entirely sticking with what the dream here is.."

*

Having been listening to Lorna and Bobby for the past few minutes, Logan finally nods and speaks up again after what Bobby said, "That's exactly what I mean." He looks to Lorna, "I know the X-Men are trying to be the better people an' I don't fault 'em for it. Hell, it's admirable." He seemingly produces a cigar from nowhere and crams it into the corner of his mouth, still speaking over it, "An' I'm not saying we put on our uniforms and go blow shit up, I wouldn't do that to Jean an' Chuck." He fishes out a lighter from his pocket and burns the tip of the cigar finally as Lorna mentions the covert missions they've been keeping from the rest of the team. He nods after her, "I owe my life to Charles. I'll never be able to pay him back." There's a moment where guilt begins to swim up from the back of his head and for an instant he dwells on his actions and how they directly contradict what Charles is working for. It gives him pause for a moment as he chews on his cigar. "But what good is a dream if everyone's dead or in collars." He says the last part to no one in particular and trails off as he sighs to himself.

*

"I honestly don't see a conflict." Bobby tells them. "We can believe in the Prof's dream of peaceful coexistence with humans and still defend ourselves. The Dream is a long term goal. Even the law acknowledges the right to self defense. I'd say stopping the assholes who are kidnapping our people qualifies. It's not like we're going out and blowing up police stations."

*

Lorna inclined her head to Logan, "Scott was about ready to kick me out for my work on Genosha. We'd had an embargo from the UN, no trade… there'd been over six months of war. There were still attacks going on and people needed medicine. I worked with the Brotherhood to steal medical supplies. This? If he and Jean find out, it wouldn't be pretty. Bobby, we're not just taking out their facilities.." She hesitated and exhaled a rough breath.

"You don't have to join us if we're doing these things.." She glanced toward Logan, pursing her lips.

*

Logan looks over the couch to Lorna, his expression blank but stern. His eyes linger on her for a moment before they shift towards Bobby. Wrinkles form between his brows as he considers everything they've done and Bobby's return. He's glad to have Bobby back around but some of the things they've been up to… he just doesn't need to be a part of. "Some of it you should sit out for, bub." He keeps staring at Bobby to let that sink in. Coming from him, telling him to sit out. "I'm not one to tell you what to do, but you gotta just trust me on this." Some of the shit they've done turns his stomach if he thinks about it too much. Mainly the first hit. He doesn't like to think about it, but sometimes he just has to. He nearly chews through the cigar as he slowly paces behind the couch, idly swirling his beer can.

*

Bobby Drake looks from Lorna to Logan then back. "You're killing them?" It's really a statement and not a question. "I'm… not sure I could do that." Though when he thinks it through to the logical end, what else would they do with them? Catch and release? "I… Well, maybe." Though he does glance sidelong at Lorna. Logan he's not surprised about but…

*

Lorna pursed her lips, "The former Genoshan scientists, the ones that experimented and tortured mutates.. yes. But only them." She breathed, and inclined her head to Logan. "They're like Nazis Bobby, they think we're less than human. Property. And they're trying to bring their Genosha tech and ways here." She whispered, green eyes flickering back to Bobby.

"I met and held mutates so scarred by the mutate programing Bobby.. some never recovered.. Most did, and are getting back to life but.." She swallowed hard. "It was like everything we studied in our history classes. But it was real.. shaved heads.. numbers tattoo'ed.. collars.."

*

Logan glances at the floor as he puffs on his cigar, realizing that the revelation of what he and Lorna have been up to isn't the best thing for Bobby to be hearing upon his return. But then again it's the world they live in now and unfortunately if it wasn't done things could be progressing against mutants faster than they already are. "It's a lot to take in," he admits. He finally glances back up at Lorna, then to Bobby again.

"Things have clearly changed since you left, but you know Charles an' the rest are making the best of the situation. They're tryin' to make thing right in the best way they can." He wishes there was another way besides killing but it's what he knows and it's what he's good at. Maybe it makes him more like his old self. But it's who he is.

*

Bobby's expression hardens as he listens to Lorna. "Just let me know if you need me. Some things need to be done." Killing Nazis used to be the number one past time in the western world. Glancing at his beer, he finishes then stands up. "I should get going. I need to pack up a few things and then I have some stuff to do this evening. I'll be back tomorrow so if you run into Scott, let him know I'm back." He already thought a hello Real Loud so assumes the Prof already knows and probably Jean as well.
