With Spring underway in Gotham there's no better time for the elite to start showing off with whatever flavor of the month parties they can imagine. Today it's an early garden party, complete with a marque in case the weather turns, and enough tiny sandwiches and bite size cakes to feed an army. Serving staff circle with drinks trays and inside aforementioned marque there's a team of bartenders mixing cocktails.

"Oh god Kate why on Earth did I agree to come along to this with you?" Bette whispers, just barely managing to force a smile in time to greet the descending hostess. "You know I can't even have a drink to take the edge off. Next time I'm saying no unless the party is overseas! And it's not like you need me to drive you home… I know you have people for that."

*

Kate laughs softly, standing next to Bette as she wears a light grey suit with off-white shirt beneath. As well as a black wide-brimmed hat with a single purple feather. Because reasons, okay?

After she passes polite greetings to the hostess, who then leaves, Kate flashes a wry grin to her cousin, "Now, Bette, you're the one that wanted me to take you to more social things, and this is definitely a social thing." Kate gives Bette a wry look, "Besides, if you think I'm getting caught at one of these things without some sort of ripcord that I can use to escape from you're out of your mind. You know how hard it is to contrive emergencies after thirty minutes at one of these things?"

*

Showing up in her own suit, Scandal often tries to make her way to these little meetings of rich people. She's, for one, pretending to be one (well, she is somewhat well off but yeah), and often there's people here who like to spend stupid money on stupid petty things. Now she's arriving with a sharp intake of breath and a shake of her head, "Really hate these things." She mutters to herself and then smiles at the first dumb old white guy who approaches the short haired girl and tries to chat her up. She shakes his hand and nods her head to him before quickly introducing him to some older woman she knwos (well…physically older) and then slips away to get a drink.

*

Bette has at least dressed up for the occasion, with a white dress with little sparkly crystals sewn in and a matching bag too tiny to contain anything useful. "I make a terrible ripcord," she points out with a laugh. "You want me here as a smokescreen in case you /do/ leave. And I know I said I wanted to go to parties but I meant the /exciting/ ones! All anyone brings me to are sporting award ceremonies and then coach is watching everything I eat or drink."

*

Kate laughs, "Well, I'm sure there must be someone that you can talk to besides…" She pauses, catching sight of Scandal standing by herself, then mmms, "Me. That is. Um, one second Bette, I'll be right back."

She then slips off towards Scandal, giving the other woman a smile, "Hi there. I'm sure you hear this all the time, but you look familiar for some reason. Have we met before?" Of course, considering that neither is in costume, recognition is not exactly an easy thing.

*

A look at her drink and Scandal doesn't even look at Kate before she says, "That's a tired line." She looks back at Kate and hmms, "Do you use that on all the girls or just me?" She asks and chuckles before she takes a sip of her drink, "And no, we haven't met. I'd remember." She nods and then swallows the entire drink before leaning into the bar, "Kate Kane, right?" She asks and tilts her head, "And before you say it, you're famous." She chuckles, "Not hard to keep up with the papers." She then taps the bar to order another drink.

*

The party seems to be fully in swing by now. The volume of conversation a little louder, the drinks trays empty a little faster and the little social cliches forming at various tables.

Meanwhile Bette makes a very awkward bee-line towards the buffet and helps herself to a small plate of boring salad things. After all it's the middle of the tennis season and she has an extact diet to stick to.

*

Kate laughs softly, "Yes, well, it wasn't exactly a line, I thought you did look familiar." She gives a bit of a sheepish shrug, "Honestly, I find these things terribly boring… normally I arrange for a call from the office to yank me out of here after the 'party' begins."

Kate orders a Johnny Walker Blue, then glances curiously over at Scandal, "Though I have to admit, I haven't seen you at any of the parties prior to this… and you can think it's a line or not, but I'd definitely remember you." She gives Scandal a sidelong look, as if trying to place where she might have met her before.

*

A grin over at her and she glances toward Bette who has wandered off. She then looks back at Kate, "Your friend is probably lonely." She nods her head toward Bette before looking back at her drink and then saying, "As far as it goes, I doubt we've met. I'm only recently in town and I just am getting myself aquainted with Gotham." SHe looks back over at Kate and offers a hand, "Scandal."

*

Of course even if Bette can't sample the fun things herself she can at least load up a plate for her cousin and her new friend. Some dainty little cake bites, delightful fruit pies and a selection of savory options mostly served on blinis. She glides gracefully back on over, with just a pause mid-way to sneak a single tiny apple tartlet, before offering the snack to Kate and Scandal.

"Hey Kate," she greets brightly. "I thought I'd bring you and your new friend some nibbles. There's a few shrimp on there too in case you need to develop a sudden shell fish allergy and made a fast exit." She grins. "And if you do just so happen bail I can leave to make sure you get to a doctor."

*

Kate grins, "See, /this/ is why I bring you along to these. Scandal, this is my cousin, Bette. Bette, this is Scandal, who has a high amount of patience and grace for suffering through my very bad attempts at conversation." She raises her drink, "I need more alcohol in me before I can be really charming, after all."

With that, she takes one of the shrimps, giving Scandal a grin. "Gotham is… well, I've only recently gotten back after taking a few years traveling." Which, well, the tabloids were all about /that/, depending on what country she was wreaking havoc in at the time.

Not that she was really, but it was a good cover.

*

A glance at Bette and she smiles at the girl. She nods to her and takes a couple of items, popping one into her mouth before looking at Bette carefully, "Bette? You supply excuses for Kate, here, I see." She nods her head and then looks over at Kate with a smile, "Travelling is what I do. Where is it you were travelling by chance? Perhaps I have been there?"

*

"She's my cousin," Bette explains with mock wearyness and a wink. "And I'm rarely in the country for any of the events our family get dragged to. So when I am it's only fair she gets a break."

*

Kate smiles, "Well, let's see, I spent a lot of time in Japan and Thailand, which was a total blast. Much longer than one night in Bangkok, there. Also went through India, China, didn't really go through the Middle East, but Europe was amazing too." She ticks off the places, then shakes her head, giving Scandal a grin as she finishes her drink, sliding the empty glass to the bartender for a refill.

Kate then continues, "But anyway, finished that about a year ago, and… well, needed that to get my head together, so I took over the family business. And so far, that seems to be doing alright." She grins at Scandal, "And I keep the debauchery to a minimum, honest. Unless it's a party like this one, where I need a little extra liquid courage to get through it."

*

A look at Bette and she nods and hmms, "I see." SHe then considers nad looks over at Kate, "Debauchery saved only for this?" She grins and laughs a little as she nods her head, "That's too bad." She then shrugs, "I prefer more debauchery than that." She chuckles and grins, "I guess I forgive a business woman having to play it…straight." She hmms and tilts her head as she looks at Kate before glancing at Bette.

*

"Oh it won't ever get too wild here," Bette assures. "There's no way she'd bring me along to anything really exciting! Although we do need to have a chat about Thailand some time soon, because I'm thinking of renting a place by this little Muay Thai gym I found. Anyway you two enjoy these cakes because I just spotted the matriarchs of Gotham matchmaking heading this way and I am not getting dragged into a discussion about which of them has the most eligable grandson. If you need me I'll be hiding in the hedge maze. Ciao for now!"

*

[Bette Kane returns to OOC Land.]

*

Kate laughs softly, and grins, "As opposed to me, since I'm so out they never bother trying." She shakes her head, watching Bette go off towards the hedge maze, then looks back towards Scandal, "Oh, I have plenty of debauchery in me, I just have to schedule it properly since, well, respectible businesswoman and all that." She chuckles a bit, "I don't think I played anything straight since I was in West Point. Don't ask, don't tell… what a crock /that/ was."

*

A chuckle and then Scandal looks over at Bette and nods to her, "See ya." She then looks over at Kate and considers her a moment, "I see." She then takes a sip of her own drink and hmms, "Ya know, I've always been partial to red heads." She crosses her legs at the ankle, "So, do you want to continue to be here or go somewhere quieter?" She hmms and tilts her head, "You're the rich lady. You want to take me somewehere, your treat?" She winks.
