Many Hands

May 07, 2018:

Residents, visitors, and general denizens of Gotham gather for a local charity event.

East End - Gotham

Along the East End's southern region the streets begin to be overtaken by
cobblestone alleyways, alleyways that web work throughout a rundown slum
city of shacks, sheds, makeshift homes and decrepit apartments called
Alleytown. A heavily populated district many immigrants and their
descendants call home.

Park Row aka Crime Alley rests upon the other side of the main strip,
dominated by an underdeveloped housing project called Scurvy City by the
locals (it's actual name being the Skirley Apartments), East End Free
Clinic, the Bowery, Tin Roof Club, Sheldon Park, Robbinsville and the GCPD’s
9th Precinct.

Fade In…

It was Monday. Monday in Gotham, and it was the start of a week the city had designated as a week of outreach for the poor and disenfranchised of the city. What that meant? Entirely depended on the neighborhood and the needs of the citizens. And what the local charities were willing and able to offer. Here in Park Row, there seemed to be two events carrying on simultaneously. The first, was something very much along the lines of Habitat for Humanity, who had descended on Park Row and were working with the local businesses as well as Skirley Apartments too do minor repairs as needed. The other was the sort of thing which had seemed to pick up, in recent weeks. A series of mobile soup kitchens peppered the streets, catering not only to the residents, but to the various and sundry volunteers who had come out to do their bit for humanity.

As for Donna Troy, she seemed to doing a little bit of everything. Primarily, she seemed to have been tasked with photographing the events, but as the day wore on, she pitched it when it was needed, whether that might be serving on the line, or as she is currently, working on repairing the security gate that covered the windows of the Clinic when it was closed.

-

There are times when Bruce Wayne tends to be a recluse up in his mansion in between trips to Wayne Enterprises tower and subsidiaries… but this is not one of those weeks.

Bruce himself had come out for this particular set of charity events, his impeccable tux a sharp contrast -intentionally, most likely- to most of those around him. The man doesn't carry himself with ego though… instead, that standoutness seems more of a way to direct people to him for help; He is one of the sponsors through the Wayne Foundation for these things, after all.

As he walks along, Bruce gives that million dollar smile as he shakes hands and offers assistance where he can, pearly whites flashing here and there, "no. Thank /you/ for being brave enough to stand up for yourself. The Wayne Foundation is here to make Gotham a better place, and that starts with you." Bruce offers to a man who's life he just changed with a job placement at Wayne Tower.

-

Black Bolt loves to just get out there and explore. he's never been to Gotham City before, so what the hay? Though he doesn't have any kind of plans like some people, the displaced Inhuman Royal has time to himself.

Dressed in very casual clothing, that is, jeans, shoes, and a hooded jacket. very simple, very normal.

Black Bolt does end up coming across Bruce Wayne!…though he has no idea who he is, only that they presently share a sidewalk. though he is shaking plenty of hands! maybe he's popular?

Though what really gets his attention is Donna as she performs some maintenance. he taps her shoulder, before pointing at what she works on.

Perhaps silently asking if she needs help?

-

Witchdoctor herself wasn't exactly one for an alter ego, but until recently she'd been pretty unknown by most of the general population. Her appointment to the Justice League might have changed that a little, but she was hardly as recognizable as someone like Wonder Woman or Superman. It probably helped she was dressed in her 'practical' outfit of a skirt, button-up shirt and a blazer over her sorceress gown.

Making her way down the street, her eyes sweep around over the displays of charity, tilting her head to the side as she spots both Donna and Bruce, her own path taking her a few steps behind Blackagar. The clinic? It of course draws the Doctor's gaze.

-

It's a rare charity or social event in Gotham that doesn't have at least one member of the Kane family in attendance. And, with today being a break in her hectic sporting schedule, Bette has the pleasure. Her family may not be spending quite as much money as the Wayne Foundation but it never hurts to have a local celebrity make an appearance especially one willing and able to chip in with the hard work!

And so Bette, dressed modestly in a plain summer dress and sensible shoes, bustles about behind the scenes. Helping to ensure everything runs smoothly.

-

The scene of things had attracted the attention of a rather interesting figure. One that…nobody knew and yet was acting like he was one of those hoity toity types. He arrived in traditional kimono, purple with gold inlaid monkeys along the sleeves. A split-legged hakama draped about his legs and he arrived with a several other men who all were wearing far more traditional work attire. This odd Japanese fellow introduced himself as Sun Wu. He gestured that he had brought in total ten fellows who could perform the labor as he himself idly adjusted his mustache, "No charge." He'd state with a soft smile even as he had those workers go out and see where they could help.

A keen eye would notice that around the man's waist was an odd, sorta furry, belt that each of the workers had as well.

Even so, unlike Bruce Wayne, Sun Wu carried himself with every ounce of ego that could be found on the planet and then some. He saw Bruce and approached him quietly with steps that were as soft as a kiss of snow upon a wet branch in winter, "Bruce…Wayne." His voice traditionally accented, "I have heard much about you. Your name is on many buildings." He laughs at his own joke and looks around, "Quite the event."

-

"Wayne Enterprises is in many fields, and I'm proud to say on the cutting edge in many of them, yes." Still no ego there… but rather pride in that voice. The current charity cases are being dealt with by the aid workers, so it looks like Bruce has some time to deal with questions! "But yes, I'm Bruce Wayne. With whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?" Bruce inquires, those pearly whites once again flashing with a charismatic smile as he addresses 'Sun Wu'.

-

The look Donna offers the young man who taps her on the shoulder can only be described as relief. It isn't that hard to see why. She might be considered, well, tall-ish for a woman, coming in at 5'9", but that's hardly useful in this situation, when the frame of the gate they're trying to set requires her to reach well over her head and get up on her tiptoes. "Oh, you're a wonder. Would you mind taking over for me? I think I might have an easier time with the bolts." And who doesn't love power tools, right? "Two would be even better." That would be offered towards Bruce Wayne, as she sees him make his way down along the street. Muscle is muscle.

When she sees Wayne approached by the man in traditional robes, though, she doesn't press, instead turning back to the work at hand. In time to catch sight of the young woman (Witchdoctor) approaching, "If you need the clinic, it's still open, don't mind the dust."

-

Blackagar smiles softly to Donna, nodding at the instructions given and help asked for, but he does not utter even the smallest sound. he looks friendly though. maybe he's mute?

Regardless, he gets to work. a knack for fixing and repairing things, he has. he notices Witchdoctor behind him a short distance and he smiles in greeting before he's right back to his focus.

Sadly, he hasn't quite noticed Sun Wuking or Bette Kane quite yet. but He's not exactly hard to distract.

-

The Witch's gaze is brought towards Sun and Bruce's discussion, a raise of her eyebrow at the amusement to be found in the meeting of the Monkey 'King' and the billionaire. It almost sounded like the beginning of a joke. Donna's addressing her has the blonde woman shaking her head with a polite smile. "I am fine, merely looking to attend my curiosity." A pause, she glances back towards the clinic with a nod back to Blackagar in returned greeting before she places a finger to her chin in thought. "Dust and boarded up windows are not exactly aseptic for procedures. What brought this place to close?"

-

Construction work can be very tiring, so it's only a short time before Bette finds herself being asked to hand out bottled water to the volunteers. She sets a few down over by Donna and co, then moves on to offer one to Blackagar. "Would you like some water? It's all paid for by Mister Wayne, so don't worry about helping yourself."

-

The man, Sun Wu, looks and carries himself like a human. His hair, however, is spiked up like the Monkey King's preferred look. He nods to Bruce and states, "I am known as Sun Wu." He gestures to the area around, "And I have brought help. I do hope that through events like this we can ease the suffering of a city." He then looks back to Bruce, "However, I was hoping to speak to a man such as Bruce Wayne." He nods his head, "I am new to Gotham, and I wish to see more of it and understand more of it." He chuckles, "It is far different than many other large hubs of civilization in this area."

After all, he has seen it from above and the gothic structures do, most definitely seem far different.

However, before he can continue, Sun Wu notices Donna and the Witchdoctor as well as Blackagar. He considers each and states, "Many an interesting face here this fine morning." His accent is obviously asian and yet his English is near perfection.

-

As soon as the young man takes over, Donna drops her arms, hands rising to rub each of her shoulders in turn, before she heads over to grab the riveter and get to the task of setting the gate frame in place. She seems more than happy to multitask, and she neatly divides her attention between the work at hand and the young woman standing not far from the crew, "The best we can figure, someone or someones thought they might be able to raid the pharmacy, and they didn't care about leaving the place in an operable condition. With any luck—" she begins, speaking now between bursts of the whine of the riveter, "We should have things right as rain before the end of the day."

As Bette heads over, and begins to hand out water, the pace of the work slows, as the team switch out to avail themselves of the bottles and the welcome break. "I've got this," she offers to the young man, seemingly not at all perturbed by the one sided conversation, as a bottle's offered in his direction. The glance from Sun she doesn't note, coming as it does when her back's actually turned to him.

-

"I apologize then, Mr. Wu. I unfortunately don't have the time to be a tour guide for newcomers, as this is a charity event. I can certainly give you some directions, as well as some websites for your needs, though." Bruce offers as consolation.

Then Donna gets his attention, and gives her a curious raised brow… before he looks over to where Donna is doing her work, "I can spare five minutes, but I'll have to get back to it after." Bruce offers as he rolls his his sleeves.

Bruce is willing to get that impeccably tailored suit dirty? It almost seems like a travesty.

-

Witchdoctor actually gives a little click of her tongue in disappointment, nodding her head. "The allure of 'easy' narcotics can be a strong one. I had similar happen to a place I was based out of a long time ago. They were somewhat more violent in their methods, but the intention was the same." A tilt of her head, the Witch looks back at the clinic again. "Still, at the very least this repair seems a unifying activity."

-

Offered water, Blackagar smiles softly to Bette in gratitude, though he isn't vocal about it.

That would be bad.

so instead he works diligently…and fast. moving back out of his work space to look over his worksmanship. he seems to nod approvingly at it

-

A small ripple of laughter comes from a man who moves up to beside Witchdoctor. One of the workers who came with Sun Wu. The man seems to move in an odd sort of way, almost seeming uncomfortable in his own clothes as he states, "Drugs are rarely easy." He laughs again, the laughter a bit more wild than need be, "They are taken easy but then take a hard toll." He chuckles again and then proceeds to help as he can even as another laughs at teh man's statement, "No such thing as an easy fix!" He laughs some more.

Meanwhile, Sun Wu then states, "Oh well, if that is the case, then by all means you must allow me to make an appointment with you some time." He grins, "I'd love to have a longer talk…" He then blinks, "Is it traditional for the wealthy of this country to take part in physical labor?" He hmms and then looks toward Donna. He considers that a moment, "A man of my…standing, would not usually put myself in such a position." If anyone is paying attention, he seems to almost be an over the top sort. Adding emphasis to many words and standing up straighter.

-

"That's five minutes closer to being finished. So, thank you." Donna doesn't take any water herself, though she does pick up the pace of the riveting, working her way down about three quarters of the way along the awning, "It's been rather heartening to see it. This clinic is one of the few bright lights in the community, if you listen to the residents tell it. And they're protective of it in a way that they aren't about most other things. So having it back up and running will be a boon for them." Especially in an area that's unlikely to have people able to afford more than rudimentary health-care. As more of the people on the team move inside to begin the cleanup, Donna directs some of the team that came with Sun Wu. As Sun addresses her, she gives his comment due consideration, "I don't think that this country stands on ceremony in the same way as others might. I think it really comes down to personal choice and how one wishes to be perceived. I don't know that standing on ceremony or holding yourself in a way that would make people believe you were looking down your nose at them would go over very well here."

-

"I think many Gotham families like to lead by example," Bette points out, still bustling around and fetching things for people. Water, sunscreen, extra nails and so on. Every now and again she pauses to sign something for a volunteer or to take a picture. "After all who will follow you if you aren't willing to put in the effort yourself?"

-

"Contrary to popular opinions, the wealthy are not some sort of royalty in the US." There's a pause to that, before Bruce smirks, "Well, /most/ of us don't pretend to be royalty. I know some real pieces of work who might think otherwise." Bruce notes, before he gets to work on some maintenance himself. Looks like the billionaire knows his way around power tools! "So Mr. Wu, you're looking for me to be your tour guide in Gotham?" Bruce asks of 'Sun Wu', in between power screwdriver uses.

-

A hmm and then he states, "I see…" He then considers, "And merely getting to know the wealthy and what better way then to get one of the wealthiest to help me around. Besides, who knows? It might be to our mutual benefit." He nods his head and then Sun Wu looks at the work before them, "I believe I have already learned a lot."

The workers follow instruction well enough, though they seem a bit more crass to a degree.

-

"Royalty has both benevolent and tyrannical, it's all about what people are able and willing to do with their wealth…" Alyse comments, folding her hands in front of her before she looks back at the man who'd approached, chuckling softly. "I suppose that's true enough," she nods before looking towards the clinic and its repairs once more. "I confess to not being the most handy of people, but if I can lend a hand somewhere I would like to." The Witch was far more used to repairing things with her magics than her hands.

-

With Wayne's help, the frame is soon in place, and there's nothing left but to make the final adjustments on the track. All things considered, yes, a job well done. And with the job done, Donna steps back, and away, moving to where she set down her camera bag. Time to return to the actual business of documenting, which she does with a keen eye towards focusing on the human aspects. The workers, the residents, the act of coming together. Of course Bruce and Bette are included, but Donna spends no more time on them than anyone else. Clearly, these pictures aren't for the tabloids. And this go around, she does accept some water, waving off some of the team as they head off to get into line for lunch. She catches just the tail end of Witchdoctor's words, "Cleaning, organizing, working the food line, just providing company, you'd be amazed how much that's appreciated."

-

A hmm and Sun Wu listens and considers, "Impressive." He states and nods as he looks over the frame before saying, "Ya know…in all honesty." He considered and the man idly pulls what appears to be a toothpick from his ear and leans on it. Yes, leans on it. Why? It grows to the size of a full grown staff. He nods, "I could probably do most of this work inside of like…an hour?" He shrugs and then states, "Not that i'm gonna, I mean, wouldn't take that from you." His belt flicks out behind him even as his clothing, manner and outfit all change, "I'm just not that kind of guy." He laughs far more like the workers do.

He glances at the work, "Super impressive though." He nods his head, "Good for ya." He gestures again and then states, "Kinda was sick of acting like one of those spoiled rich types from the east." He snickers.

-

Once it looks like everyone is good, for the time being at least, for water and other supplies Bette allows herself a moment to pause and rest. "I think the bonds people form during these projects can often be as a valuable to the community as the clinic itself will be. When people know the people they are neighbors with they're more likely to help each other out… Sorry I must sound like I'm about to ask for a donation!" She can't help but pause when Sun Wu pulls a giant stick out of his ear. "Gosh. That is… unusual."

-

As Sun reveals himself, Donna's camera lowers from her eye. It isn't dislike that colours her face, far from it, but it is something very much like wary concern. Clearly, the woman has not forgotten her last encounter with the monkey king. Still, she seems disinclined to approach him, or to do aught else but, after a moment to glance from copy to copy, now that she's certain what they are, before she returns to work, stepping in through the clinic door to capture the work being done inside.

-

And here the Witch was worried about her own lack of subtlety when trying to blend in with the normal population. Sun had her covered! Frowning for only the slightest of moments before Alyse turns away from the man. He probably could, indeed many of the metas and mutants had the potential to make the job go quickly, but that wouldn't be quite the same exercise of community spirit. Cleaning? That has Alyse frowning far more than mystic reveals. She wasn't without a little bit of pride, but the blonde does sigh after a moment before instead making her way towards the food line, rolling up the sleeves on her jacket.

-

"Unusual in a world with aliens, mutants, inhumans, dimensional hoppers, speedsters, amazons, and megalomaniacs at this point means god like entities." Bruce quips as he watches Sun reveal himself, his left hand idling brushing off his suit, "Gotham has all kinds of crazy in and of itself." He notes, sadly. "One of the reasons the Wayne Foundation is so important." Then, he turns himself to Sun Wukong, "So, you're from the East?" Bruce asks.

-

"Most people in the world don't have powers," Bette points out. "So it's still out of the ordinary for them. Besides even for people with exceptional abilities I can't imagine there are all that many who keep magical sticks in their ears."

-

Blackagar seems to have been daydreaming. He turns around just as Sun apparently decides to reveal himself. lightly concerned, he moves over by Donna, as if just as wary and concerned as she was.

-

A chuckle and the monkey takes a bow before saying, "Sort of kind of." He responds to Bruce first before looking over at Bette and chuckling, "See, you get it. If I did everything for you then what would you learn?" He then grins, "Doesn't mean I won't send help." He gestures at the still workers even as people look at it. Sun Wukong idly lets the staff be grabbed by his tail while he walks forward and then it spins around behind him and he takes it in his left hand, "And it is no mere stick." He gestures at Bette.

He flips it over toward her, "This is Ruyi Jingu Bang." He nods, "And if you tried to lift it I imagine you'd break your arms." He chuckles before shrinking it down and sliding it back into his ear, "It was once used to measure the oceans depths!" He nods and then looks to Bruce Wayne, "A proper introduction though. I am Sun Wukong, the Monkey King and Great Sage, equal to heaven." He then looks to Donna and gestures, "She gets it." He snickers.

-

There is pride, yes. And there is also gratitude. And there's plenty of that offered to Alyse as she steps into line to serve at the soup kitchen. Many of the people are residents, but there are, as there always are, homeless and other disadvantaged that have come on the word that always seems to travel the highways and byways. And something as simple as serving a meal, in its own way, seems to reaffirm a humanity that's often lost when you're forced to live on the outskirts of society.

Donna, having finished that round of photographs, lowers and begins to stow her camera, as Blackagar comes to join her. She pulls a small note pad with attached pencil out of her pocket, offering it over to him, "I'm Donna, by the way, we haven't been introduced. Donna Troy." The slightest pursing of her lips, as Sun points in her direction, "I'm not certain about 'getting it'," she offers almost soto voce, "But we have met before."

-

Bette Kane laughs and nods. "Well you know what they say," she replies brightly. "Lift with your legs, not your arms or back. And if you can't lift it by yourself, don't force yourself to the point of injury."

-

Blackagar looks to the notepad that's offered to him from Donna, and he gives her the brightest smile that could mimic the brightness of the sun. Not literally, but you get the gist. He's rather happy. He accepts the notepad and pen gently from her hand and starts to write, showing Donna his name.

'Blackagar Boltagon. '

Unique name. Maybe he's an alien? He writes some more. 'it is nice to meet you.' smiley face. Though his eyes shift back to the Monkey King and he looks more wary now than anything.

Though he also looks now to Bette, offering her a friendly wave.

-

There's a long stare from Bruce Wayne as the monkey king introduces himself after he's finished with the maintenance. Then, he just smiles slightly, offering a hand to Sun Wukong, "Bruce Wayne, CEO of Wayne Enterprises and philanthropist. "You seem like an interesting one. Let's call it… this Friday around 5:00 PM?"

-

Taking the hand, Wukong nods in return, "And you, too, Mr. Wayne." He then glances at Bette and tilts his head, "They…say that?" He then looks back at Bruce, "Do they say that?" He seems unsure before shrugging, "If she says so." He then looks over at Blackagar and huhs, "That's…quite the name." He then blinks at Donna, "If you say so. I think you get it." He laughs and then hops up and lands on a cloud sitting in a cross legged manner.

-

When Blackagar offers a smile, Donna seems happy enough to return it. Smiles, like most friendly gestures, are infectious. Especially when they're genuine. Her eyes lower to the pad, reading the response there, before she asks the question, "Nice to meet you as well. Do you have a preferred name that you'd like me to call you, or shall I simply call you Blackagar?" With such an unusual name, there's no knowing what the conventions might be. She can't even say with any certainty which is the forename and which the surname. "Perhaps I am beginning to, yes, Sun Wukong." It's really all a matter of perspective.

-

"It's part of the health and safety guidebook," Bette points out earnestly. "It's recommended reading for anyone helping out, to reduce the insurance liabilities. Anyway it has been wonderful speaking with everyone, but I promised that I'd help with some of the paperwork back in the office. If you do need anything don't hesitate to shout up, there are plenty of volunteers who'll be happy to help."

-

"Not everyday you mean a Monkey King, after all." Bruce gives that smile again, before he starts to head over to the mobile kitchens, giving a wave to a man, "Hello Sir! I'm Bruce Wayne, and I've been told by your son you need some steady shelter. It just so happens I know of a great place the Wayne Foundation funds nearby. Do you need the address?" Bruce states as he continues his charity work.

-

With the lunch hour growing longer, most of the work seems to have fallen to an easy pace. Enough so that Donna can finally step away from doing the work she seems inclined to do, and get back to the work she's quite likely being paid to do. Not that she doesn't seem to enjoy that as well. Before she goes, she does offer to Blackagar, "Walk with me, if you like." And then they, as with most of the ones who came together so briefly, filter back out into the neighborhood.

Blackagar smiles to Donna and jots down on the paper that 'Black Bolt' is an acceptable shortened version of a name he likes to go by. As she offers to him to walk with her, he nods, and does so.
