Fade In…

Babs has invited Rowan over to the Clocktower several times, so it seems only fair that Rowan invite Babs to his place. Which isn't, let's be clear, any clocktower. It's a small apartment near the harbor. Quite close to the beach, yes, but not at all spacious. Well actually that depends on your point of view. It's more space than Rowan has ever had to himself in his life and if it's not fancy it's at least clean. The Blue will be cooking dinner, well, is cooking dinner. Seafood, rice and vegetables. He's still learning how this whole cooking thing works but he's become relatively adept at such basic techniques as pan frying and sauteeing.

-

Unlike Rowan, it takes Babs a while to get from Gotham to New York and following his directions locates his apartment and knocks on his door… waiting to be invited in or for the door to be opened.

As a change, she's wearing a dress that reaches to mid calf and knee length boots.

-

Rowan opens the door. It smells like fish in the house, though not in the manner of that musty, fishy smell, but rather, it smells of cooking fish and lemon and pepper and butter. "Babs!" Rowan smiles. "Come on in." He opens the door and stands aside to make room for her. "I'm so glad you could make it." He pauses, canting his head at the difference in her attire. "That looks nice on you. I don't think I've ever seen you wear something like that."

-

As Rowan opens the door, Babs gets the wafting smells of the cooking "Mmmm, something smells good Rowan" and she moves her chair into his apartment "Why thank you, I thought to try something a little different…. Where do you want me?"

-

Rowan smiles and moves back toward the kitchen. "Make yourself at home." And he means it. The fact that Rowan is so clean means that there's basically no floor clutter to get in Bab's way. "Do you want something to drink? I'm almost done with the fish here. Er, salmon, talapia and tuna. I was told sufacers like them. They're all 'cooked' the same way. Still getting the hang of it."

-

"Do you have wine? I feel like a glass… if not, just water." Babs says as she moves towards the kitchen "Is here ok? and the food sounds lovely… are you learning to cook?" The redhead takes up a position, out of the way where can watch and interact Rowan.

-

"Wine… that's the… fermented grape drink. I do have some… though you'll have to tell me if it's any good. I have discovered that my tastes in 'hard' beverages are not always what surfacers would consider good." The blue comes over with a bottle of red and a bottle of white. The red looks expensive. The white does not. Rowan still doesn't have a feel for these things. "Oh and where yo uare is just fine. I'm trying to learn to cook yes… we don't… do this underwater. For obvious reasons.'

-

Nodding at Rowans question, Babs agrees "Fermented grape juice, um yes, I guess" Looking at the bottles presented Babs is torn…"Fish, is best served with White wine… let's try it. The white wine please Rowan…. I'm sure the food will be delicious."

-

Rowan smiles and hands over the white, then returns to the cooktop. It doesn't take long before he's back with fish fillets, pan fried with lemon butter and pepper and served up with capers. Also rice and steamed broccoli. It's not a gourmet meal by any sense of the imagination but it is fresh and hot.

-

Babs is left holding a cold bottle of white wine…"Rowan, you don't drink wine from the bottle. Do you have any glasses? Just tell me where they are…" Babs is exceedingly amused by this whole turn of events.

-

"Er… yes. They're in the cabinet right over there…" Rowan points, looking sheepish. So many customs he's not aware of. He at least does have the good grace to blush. "I was also recently told it's not usually drunk in… er… quantity."

-

Babs move to the cabinet indicated by Rowan, but can't reach it. Sighing, she says quietly "I'm sorry Rowan, you'll need to get them for me. I am sorry." and after a pause "Definitely not consumed in quantity." Babs looks slightly mortified at the turn of events.-

-

"Oh don't apologise." Rowan goes to get a pair of glasses that… aren't wine glasses. But not huge either. "I should have thought of of that. I'm sorry." He sits down and then opens the bottle, pouring a little in to each glass before he dishes out fish rice and veggies to each plate.

-

Babs moves to the table and overcomes her awkwardness as the wine is poured and the meal served. Finally setting in position, she glances up shyly before trying the food "Oh, that's lovely Rowan. It's beautiful" Table etiquette and wine is forgotten.

-

Rowan smiles. He's not really up on surfacer etiquette either so he simply scoots over next to Babs. Easier that way. Blue in his world aren't very standoffish. There isn't physical space enough to be. Everyone gets real comfortable in tight quarters. "You like it?" He beams. "I'm glad. Your people prepare food so many ways, some of them complex. I tried a few simple ones."

-

And Babs is used to her physical space, so when Rowan comes close she stiffens slightly before relaxing in the company. "I do like it… but cooking… what you've just done here…" her look by turns is sheepish and sorrowful "is not really something that entices me." Babs looks down at her plate as she collects herself, then turning her gaze on Rowan and smiles "What about you, do you like it?"

-

Rowan doesn't look offended, thankfully. He frowns and shrugs. "No… well, I'm not sure. It's different. Underwater we eat everything raw and as I've told you before most everything else I've ever eaten was some kind of preserved ration." He smiles. "If you'd like we can simply have something delivered. I know you're probably hungry and there certainly isn't any reason not to enjoy your food." Not when there's so many choices. The Blue does have an ego, yes, but it doesn't extend to his very minimal cooking skill.

-

Babs frowns slightly at Rowan, "Well I quite like it, but if it's not to your tastes… order something in. Me, I'm going to finish what you've prepared… " Gazing intently at the displaced warrior Babs checks "If you would rather something else?"

-

Rowan blinks. "Oh, sorry. I must have misunderstood." His smile turns sheepish again. "I thought you said that it didn't entice you. I assumed you meant the food wasn't quite to your liking. I'm not good at 'cooking' so it seemed reasonable. I just wished to provide you with something to your liking."

-

Sighing Babs looks crestfallen "I simply meant that I don't like cooking. I like what you've prepared very much, Rowan." Babs takes a sip of the wine, it's passable "Have you tried the wine, Rowan…."

-

Rowan takes a sip. It's odd, watching him. He swirls it around, getting a feel for the taste before finishing it up. Then he takes another bite of fish. The capers are… good. Less lemon next time. Not much less, but less. "It's an interesting flavor. Is it considered good or bad? I'm… sorry I seem so… uncertain here but I don't know what 'good' wine is supposed to taste like."

-

Babs takes the glass from Rowan and puts it on the table "Surfacers… we… eat and drink for pleasure. If you don't like something, or not sure, don't eat or drink it… What each person considers good or bad is such a personal experience. I use a simple rule… If I like it, it's good. If not, it's bad."

-

Rowan nods. Soldiers eat so they can do the next thing. It's not unfair to say most of the time they don't taste what they're wolfing down. Which is a good thing most of the time because it usually doesn't taste like much. "Do you like it, then?"

-

"Yes, both the food and the wine" and Babs stops eating momentarily "and the company, of course." Her meal is nearly finished, obvious testimony to those words.

-

"I'm glad you like it. The food is a new experience for me and I am enjoying the company as well." He slides his plate away, now empty and tries the wine again. Hrm. It's not bad. But best not to drink too much, since the surfacers don't. "How have you been Babs?"

-

Finishing her food, every last bit, Babs pauses to take a drink, just a sip. "I've been been fine, Rowan, even better than that. Particularly after that lovely surprise you gave me".

-

Rowan chuckles. "I'm glad you liked that as well. Dolphins are fun and that was a rare chance. Well, perhaps not rare, but even I don't often have time to simply play with them, even if it all was in the name of work." He cants his head slightly. "The Oracle has been active again. She contacted a group of people I was near. Heard her voice." He mentions because this 'Oracle' seems to have a particular interest in Babs.

-

Babs is beaming, thinking about the wonderful time she had. When Rowan mentions Oracle, she tilts her head as well. A sip of the wine, and a non-committal "Oh… and what were you doing with these people?" it's interest that colors her tone.

-

"Being curious. I heard glass shattering and when I flew up to see I found a fight in progress. It was rather odd." Many things surfacers do is odd by Rowans standard.

-

"Curious…" Babs smiles but hides it behind her glass "Odd? In what way?" Babs looks at the plates "If you're finished, I'll clear away…"

-

"Oh… of course. I'll help. I lacked… context. Someone had clearly started a fight but it was unclear to me who or why." Rowan shakes his head and smiles.

-

Stacking the plates and cutlery, Babs balancing them on her knees as she moves towards the kitchen. "Tell me about it Rowan. I don't know what questions to ask… or was it just one of those she you wanted to mention?"

-

"She seems to have an interest in you, somehow. I thought you should be aware that she was active." Rowan thinks that Oracle is well intentioned enough to trust her guidance, but her interest in Babs is rather curious to him.

-

Babs moves the plates to the sink and looks at Rowan. "You'll have to do the dishes, I'm afraid" then tilting her head, a small smile twisting her lips "Why do you think she has an interest in me?"

-

Rowan hits the water and begins to scrub, shrugging a bit. "She's mentioned you. Seemed odd. Most of the rest of the folks she's mentioned have been champions of some kind."

-

"Just that once? Is that what you mean or have there been other times?" Babs asked quietly… watching Rowans reactions…

-

"Just the once, though once was enough." Rowan cants his head. "I was wary of her but she seems to mean well. In my world such knowledge could mean nothing good but in this one…"

-

"You wouldn't want her to contact you again and ask for help, Rowan", Babs heads back to the table to get her glass of wine…

-

"No, I would. Now. I was nervous at first. I expected the Nameless to come find me. But then others told me she helped. Clearly she's a champion in her own right. One that does not need to take the field to make herself felt." Rowan seems to respect that.

-

Wine in hand, Babs turns back toward Rowan and listens. Nodding at his answer, she frowns slightly "the Nameless?" and then putting her wine on a flat surface "Give me a towel and I'll dry"

-

"My enemies. Well, some of them. I've seen them in this world before. They seem to be able to portal in, in small numbers." Rowan says softly. "They're dangerous."

-

"And I'm sure I've asked that of you before" Babs looks mortified. Moving closer to Rowan, she places a hand on his arm… "I won't ask again…"

-

Rowan places his hand over hers and gives it a little squeeze. "I don't mind telling you. I'm just worried. I don't know how they find me and I'm worried what they may want, or do here. They're ruthless."

-

"Mmmm, it sounds like you should be concerned. From everything you tell me, your world was harsh and ruthless." Babs hasn't moved her hand. "Do you want me to dry these dishes?"

-

"If you would like. They can air dry, if you'd like." The notion of air drying had been a novel one to him. He's used to it now though. Rowan hasn't moved his hand either, in fact he's turned so he can face Babs.

-

"Air drying huh?" Babs gives Rowan a small smile "How long did it take the man who lives under the water, to accept that concept?" Despite the smile, Babs is watching Rowan intently…

-

"Little bit. I didn't understand the need to dry them at all at first. I thought perhaps they should be stored in water." Rowan shrugs sheepishly. "That's what I get for assuming. Rowan cants his head, regarding Babs through her own regard.

-

"Stored in water… I suppose we could, but water gets icky after a while." Babs goes to move her hand "What did you want to do now? Did you have something in mind?"

-

"I had some more teas…" Rowan ventures. "I'd thought we might take the opportunity to sample them." He's discovered that he likes tea. It's a bonus that Babs also likes tea and he's discovered several good places to get it.

-

Bab smiles delightedly. "Tea sounds wonderful. The last ones you bought me were, are, just lovely." She looks up at the Blue Warrior "You seem to be enjoying trying different things, Rowan…"

"I am. Though, er, if it's not too much to say I mostly am because I've had help and very good company to do so. Shall we brew some up and maybe go out and enjoy the sunset on the beach?"
