Brood in the Danger Room

August 11, 2017:

Nate and Logan train against Brood in the danger room.

Danger Room - New York City

This room is bordered by a walled and windowed off control
panel, where either someone can man the settings of what projects for the
competitors inside, or set it to a random scan with multitudes of varying
scenario selections, down to ones that truly held a past with X-Men
missions.
The Room's World View Model Library has digital models of over 50
million objects and their attributes, including weapons, vehicles,
buildings, and aliens in order to make the scenario's laid out true.
Although everything is an illusion within the Danger Room's arena, the way
it is projected seems near to realistic within the heavy metal bunker that
is meant to withstand up to atomic levels of blasts from within, or without.

The Arena of the Danger Room itself bears a hardened floor that
even bears the 'X' shape within ridges, but every small nook and cranny
bears a porpose from image projection, gravitational irregularities, and
effects that can even be felt as their true to nature texture and
atmosphere.
This is the training space where the X-Men truly learn to push
themselves.

Fade In…

Since arriving at the mansion, not too long ago, Logan had not yet doing any physical training. Sure, the future, where he is from, kept him in shape, but he had not fought alongside others in a long time. He had to make sure that he could keep focus whilst under attack, and not slip into a berserker rage. The last thing he wanted was to repeat that tragic night. So here he is in the Danger Room, not for the first time, but the first time in a hell of a long time.

*

On the other hand Nate has been using the Danger Room quite a bit lately. As a matter of fact, he is staying at the mansion mostly for the Danger Room and the training preparation for Genosha. Otherwise he would be spending most of his time in Mutant Town.

Not a teacher and not a student. Just an X-Men and often considered in the 'reserve' by the senior members of the team. But Nate has family and friends at Xavier's so he is always willing to come to help. And he is usually available for another Danger Room simulation. Good exercise, although he can't take too seriously the 'danger' part. "So… you wanted a partner, old man? Looks like someone thought I should be it," he comments, looking somewhat amused.

*
Logan grunts, "I may be old, but I probably can still kick your ass… Well in a brawl, no psychics." Logan begins to stretch his arms above his head, "Mind if I limber up?" He doesn't wait for a response and continues with his warm up. "I don't want to pull anything, and leave an open."

After a couple of minutes, Logan feels ready. "I'm just glad to have someone. Though maybe with you here we can do some psychic training. I don't want Mysterio, or anyone else, tricking me again, like he did."

*

"Bad guys wouldn't allow a warm-up," points out Nate, unhelpfully. No response to the possibility to having his ass kicked if he was not allowed to use his psychic powers. Logan has metal bones and centuries of experience on him, that is just silly.

"How is you are not joining the Genosha sims?" That is a more important question. It is true Logan has arrived recently but did he change so much in a hundred years as to prefer to stay out of the fight this time?

*

Logan shoots Nate a look, almost glaring. Of course, he knew "bad guys" wouldn't allow a warm-up. However, it had been a long time since he been a proper fight. Hell, before he arrived here, it had been a long time since he saw a handful of people. "Look it is too dangerous for me to be out there right now. I need to know I have proper control over myself." He looks Nate in the eyes, "Do you want to know what I did to you? The other you." He breaks eyes, and looks down. He scratches his head, "Besides, Slim still doesn't trust me. Even though Rogue has warmed up to me. Though she still prefers the other me."

*

"Yeah, Cyke never liked yo…Logan much, not sure why. The other Logan was never around much I saw," and Nate must have missed the whole rivalry thing through being mostly absent from the mansion life for years. Not much given to gossip, either.

The mention to 'another you' makes him give Logan a brief glance. As dangerous as Logan (still hard not to call him 'Weapon X') is reputed to be, Nate is pretty sure he can keep him and his claws at bay with telekinesis and easily handle him. Only way the old man could take him down is by surprise. Which means Nate had gotten soft and stupid. Always a worry in this usually peaceful Earth. "You tell me when you are ready," he grunts. Not asking.

*

Logan chuckles, "Yeah, I don't think any version of Slim or I will ever get along." He notices Nate's glance. "Yeah, it can't be easy looking at someone who in another world killed you. No one ever does want to know what happened. Can't blame you, or anybody else." He sighs. "Any way, I'm ready."

*

"No, that is silly. You should tell us what happened and everything you remember," points out Nate. "Not now and not just to me. To the Professor and the senor X-Men. We need to prepare and develop a quick counter to prevent it from happening. As soon as possible."

He is ready? About time! "I was born ready," well, if he had been 'born' in the first place. "Hit the start button, or command or whatever." He crackles his knuckles and his left eye lits gold. Forcefields up.

*

Logan goes over to the controls. "Let's see what we have." He presses a few buttons and the machinery in the Danger Room begins to whirl. Suddenly, Nate and Logan find themselves in the middle of a desert. Even though Logan knows he is under the mansion in New York, the desert feels real. He feels the heat of the sun shining down on him. He looks around studying the landscape. "I think we're in the middle of the Nevada desert." He points in a direction, "Yeah, that way would be where Vegas lies. What do you think?"

*

Nate is pretty used to the DR illusions. Lacking super-human senses, for him they are damn near perfect. Only when he peers into the psychic plane he can partially feel the artifice. He rarely has the chance to do it in a simulation, of course. He usually comes to fight.

"Eh? Beat me, last time I was in Nevada…" he makes a vague annoyed gesture. Weapon X facility, Laura clones. Messy. There are some info in the mission reports. Scarce, since none of the X-Men involved (Laura, Illyana, himself) likes to write reports. "Never been in Las Vegas," he adds, distractedly. He is psi-scanning for hostiles.

*

"You've never been to Las Vegas?" asks Logan, "It's great. Even if it is hard on the senses. Never mind that though now. Heck, I don't even we can go that far." Suddenly, there is a buzzing sound in the distance. Logan pauses and listens, with his hearing he can hear sound farm miles away. "Hey, Nate do you hear that yet?" He tries to work out what direction the sound is coming from. "It sounds like… almost like wings? Like giant insect wings? Surely it can't be… can it? Nate, I think we've got sleazoids incoming."

*

+MEET: Darcy Lewis has arrived via +meet.

*

Nate nods, looking where Logan is pointing, shading his eyes with a hand. "Aliens, yeah. Hard to read for me," he notes. "Hmm, not a lot of cover and those critters can fly, if they are armed, you are screwed." But he will be nice and try to bring down a few for the old man to claw at. "I have seen those in other simulations. Ugly bastards."

*

[Darcy Lewis heads to the Quiet Room.]

*

"Well their queens are not usually that far behind either. At least my healing factor would protect me from their embryos if they do turn up." Logan unsheathes his claws. "However, I do feel this pressure is the exact situation that I need. Hopefully, I don't lose it, because then you might have me and these sleazoids to deal with."

Then just above a line of nearby mountains, shadows form in the sky. They must have seen the two mutants, as the brood seem to be flying directly at them. They are moving surprisingly fast, and it won't be long before they arrive.

*

"No problem, old man," replies Nate with a smirk. He can also cancel the simulation with a code world, anyway. "Yeah, they saw us. Lets see if I can do something to alter their formation," he adds.

Something in this case means grabbing a ten ton rock from the desert floor and throwing it to the broodling horde. Possibly too far for them not to fly out of the way easily. But there are more projectiles at hand, and he will start blasting when they are closer.

*

Logan stands and watches as Nate fires the boulder at the brood. There's not much that Logan can do from where he is, and he doesn't think that a fastball special is a good idea.

The boulder strikes a couple of Brood in the front ranks. They immediately crash to the floor. Others nearby scatter to avoid the boulder. Their formation is now more scattered.

"Nice shot." Logan compliments.

*

Nate hmm, "clumsy of them, and no guns," he notes. In truth he has never met real Brood aliens, but they seem popular in Danger Room scenarios. Probably because they are among the most dangerous aliens out there.

"Maybe they are not even sentient this time," guesses Nate. They are close enough, so he fires a force blast from his left eye, again to the center of the alien critters formation. "How many do you guess are up there?"

*

"You want me to count?" exclaims Logan. "I dunno maybe a hundred." The blast strikes a few more brood "Yeah these Brood do not seem that bright." The Brood are now flying overhead circling. A couple are starting to swoop down to try to attack. As one flies down close, Logan tries to strike back, but his claws just fall short of the alien creature. "The last thing we want though is for these sleazoids to land around us. We don't want to be surrounded."

*

"You have enhanced senses, don't you?" So yeah, Logan can count them. Could. Too late now. Still, a hundred dumb aliens don't sound too bad for a high difficulty Danger Room scenario. Except it would have been nice to have cover of any variety, because how could they not be surrounded?

"Then maybe we should have flown somewhere else more defendable while we could," replies Nate with a smirk. "Too late now to do much but take them down as fast as we can." He fires another telekinetic blast, this time point blank. Then he takes a fighting stance, directing his telekinesis to strength and invulnerability.

*

"That means I can see far, I don't have super counting powers!" Logan exclaims, "Well we could've done but you decided to throw a boulder at them!" Logan takes another swipe as another gets in close. "When this is over remind me to teach you some combat strategy."

*

Nate laughs. "Well, you are the veteran, old man," points out Nate. He has most of his power to self-enhancement, but still enough telekinesis to pull one of the 'sleazoids' hard, within Logan's claws reach. "You make the plans, I like to improvise." Besides, Nate can make plans, but they rarely survive ten seconds into the fight. And he is most used to fight alone.

*

Logan takes advantage of the grappled Brood and runs it through with his claws. "Like that, you have great psychic powers, yet you target just one!" Logan sighs, "Right tell you what, do you think you can stun a few at a time, to allow me to finish them off whilst you keep the others at bay?"

*

"Maybe, but they are aliens and my telepathy does not work great on aliens," points out Nate. "Also, if I switch to telepathics and go all out, I drop my defenses. And I am not as quick with the telepathy as Xavier or Jean."

Still, the Danger Room is to try new tactics and take risks with little consequences, so. "Alright, give me five seconds, and if I get skewered, it was your fault."

He falls to a defensive stance and concentrates, touching as many alien minds as he can in a few seconds. His body loses the golden protective glow, but his left eye becomes blinding bright as he strikes the alien minds around him. Dozens of Broodlings recoil in agony, half-paralized, about a dozen fall unconscious, a couple of them outright die, minds shattered like glass. Even Logan will feel the psychic pulse, which would have given him a serious headache if not for his healing factor. "Go now," grunts Nate.

*

Logan strikes one Brood after the other, "killing" them as he goes. "Yeah… I don't think a… a mental stun requires… fine psychic manipulation." He finishes striking the group of Brood that's fallen around him. The number of Brood has fallen by about half.

*

"Well, you are wrong," grunts Nate, who now has a level 10 headache. "Although I gotta admit doing it in the middle of the desert is far easier than doing in the middle of New York, with a million other minds interfering."

Since so many of the Broodlings are getting slaughtered by Logan, Nate takes off and attacks those still in the air. Charging them and scattering them, forcing more than a few to land, so Logan can finish them off. Soon there are not enough of them to really surround them.

*

Logan watches as Nate flies off taking out more Brood as he flies. He soon loses track of where Nate has gone in the frenzy of finishing off the rest of the Brood. Once they have all been taken care of, he looks around for Nate. "Now where's he gotten too?" He can't see any sign of him, "Hmmm, he must have left already. Computer terminate program." The brood and desert soon disappear from around him, and he finds himself in back in the Danger Room. Sure, enough Nate is not in the room. "Well, he could have waited."
