Fade In…

Wanda stares at the gates of the Institute. Inside there, supposedly, is her brother. All she has to do is knock and they can be back together…if he is there. But still she stands there. Maybe she should sneak in? Just to make sure he's okay and then leave. He is happy…he wrote it so himself…so why bring him her misery? She is dressed in simple jeans and t-shirt with a scarlet jacket over it. Wanda has had very little time to change or even wash lately and she is reverting back to her homeless look…though not intentionally. A half-step towards the gate…her hand raised to knock. And then lowered again.

*

Pat. Pat. Pat. There's the sound of a basketball echoing against the pavement. Pat. Pat. Pat. Scuffing feet. Swish. Then there's a blur of motion. The ball is retrieved. Repeat. Pietro has been there a little while now, just idly shooting the ball without using his abilities. Though…he does use them to retrieve the ball when it inevitably goes astray.

*

The sound of the ball against concrete gets Wanda's attention…and it's an excuse not to knock on the door. She warily approaches the noise, keeping to what shadows she can find until she knows for sure there is no danger. And then there he is. Wanda gasps and then forgets to breathe as she watches him at play. A nervous swallow before she takes a cautious step onto the court. "Pietro?" Her voice is little more than a whisper and she is trembling with worry.

*

Pietro makes a little jump-shot. The basketball goes sailing and bounces off the rim. He's about to retrieve it when he hears the approaching footsteps.
The spell, or whatever it is that was locking her face out of his brain is momentarily suspended with a headache pang and a wave of nausea. He doubles over for only a moment, then zips towards her. He hugs her tightly and closely, then he murmurs, "Oh god, Wanda. I'm so sorry."

*

Wanda bursts into tears as she hugs her brother in return. She has needed him by her side so much lately. He won't believe what she has been through. With this block in his mind does he even register any news about her? "Pietro" she whimpers, pressing herself against him, and gripping him hard so that he will never get away again. "I've needed you so much." She pulls her head back, tears streaming down her cheeks, as she looks up into his eyes. A hand gently caressing his jaws. "You sound so American" she giggles, her own accent still heavy and present. "This life really suits you."

*

"Yeah, well, you know me and American culture. I think I wore out papa's 8 track listening to the Beach Boys." Pietro pulls her close and kisses her forehead. "Are you okay?" he murmurs. "Has anyone tried to hurt you?"

*

At Pietro's questions she actually laughs…though without humour. "I have so much to tell you" she sighs, staring at him to make sure she never forgets his face like he has done with her. "I don't even know where to begin but…I am happy that you are happy. Yes…" she nods, smiling warmly again, "…you always wanted to come here and I see how much you love it. And I hear you have a girlfriend too? Or more than one. You never really only had one."

*

Pietro turns a little pink. "Ah, no, I don't have a girlfriend. Who told you that? Who have you been listening to? Rumours. Lies and slandor. Gossipmongering." He nudges her gently. "You should know better." He smiles warmly. "I'm…not happy, Wanda. I'm making due. I mean, things are good here, don't get me wrong. But I've been worried about you. I can't be happy when I'm worried about you."

*

"You're not happy?" That strikes Wanda like a thunderbolt to the heart. For all her sadness at being alone the one thing that brought her happiness was knowing that Pietro was happy…and that was a lie too. "I am sorry that I have made you worry" Wanda replies softly, though she can't lie to him and say that he has nothing to worry about. "Things are…" She scratches at her head…hard enough to make it bleed. "…confusing. I have met so many people but t has not all been good. The voices are really loud, Pietro. When you're not around they won't stop." There is much frustration in her tone.

*

Pietro grabs her scratching hand and squeezes it. "Hey, hey. Calm down. You've come to the right place. There are telepaths here, and people who know stuff. They can help you. And I trust them. I was…" he bites the edge of his lip. "…suspicious at first, since the people we trust sometimes want to hurt us. But I believe these people actually mean what they say."

*

Wanda glances over at the Institute and shakes her head. "No…I…" This is so hard for her to think much less say. "I don't think we should be in the same place. When they come for us…and they will come for us…one of us needs to be free." She swallows nervously. "Some people have tried to take me away. They were not the people from home but others. And I have been…places. And I have had to fight monsters. And I…am living with a vampire. And I am in love with Bobby but he broke my heart and I did terrible things because I lost control. And I hurt my friends. And I miss you ever minute of the day." It all comes out in a rush.

*

Pietro wraps both his hands around his sister's and squeezes them tight. His eyes are moist, though he's doing his best to be strong. "I'm so, so sorry I wasn't there for you. If I could have found you…" he takes a deep breath. "Whoever put this block in my brain knew what they were doing. The only way to keep us apart is if I can't find you."

*

"I know it's not your fault" Wanda whispers, doing her best to be strong as well but failing brilliantly. "But that does not make it any easier. I should go…before they find us." She looks up into his eyes and offers a faint smile. "Thank you for the letter. I will treasure it." A quick wiping of her own eyes. "I love you, Pietro. We will always be together…" She places a hand over her heart. "In here. And we will fix this together. Good bye…for now." A quick kiss to his cheek before she tears herself away.

*

"Wanda, please. Don't go. I'm going to forget your face as soon as you're out of sight." Pietro squeezes her hand and holds on to it. "I don't forget you, though. Please know that. I still remember everything but your face and your name."

*

"It is /me/ I want you to remember" Wanda smiles softly to him as squeezes his hand in return. "Would a picture help?" She found a tossed away photo of some unknown twins being happy that Wanda now treasures as a picture of them. It's something at least. "You always said I wasn't as pretty as you anyway, so I think it is good you forget my face" she teases before hugging him tightly one last time. "If you have a phone…take a picture."

*

The twins think alike sometimes. Pietro's already scrambling for his phone even as she's making the suggestion. He fumbles with the touch screen and then brings the camera up. He reaches out and touches her chin. "Smile?"

*

Smile? Some days Wanda forgets she knows how to. But for her brother she does her best. Wiping her eyes and cheeks dry she offers him the smile that he's known all his life…but now can never remember. "Get my good side" she teases, hoping against hope this works.

*

Pietro takes at least ten photos to make sure it takes. He also emails the photos to himself, and to Kitty, just for a backup. Even if somehow this thing spreads to his phone, at least there will be a way for other people to know what she looks like. He smiles as best he can as well, then tucks his phone away. He dugs into his wallet and empties out every penny he has into her hand. "If you need more, tell Bobby. I'll get you more. Don't sleep on the street. Please." All he has in that wallet amounts to twenty-eight dollars and a pack of Tic-Tacs. "If I knew you were coming, I would have pickpocketed all of Westchester."

*

Wanda giggles at that last remark…he would have too. "Thank you, Pietro" she smiles, looking down at the money and getting teary again before pocketting it. "Oh…I almost forgot." She takes out a small parcel from her other pocket and hands it to him. "I found a Transian store in New York and I ordered something for you and my closest friends. It will protect you…I hope…against dark powers. Witch powers." She frowns and takes a deep breath. "My powers…when I lose control. Wear it…please." It is a necklace with a small amuelt attached. "And I will not sleep on the street and…I shall see with Bobby and I. If we still talk after all I have done." Her fingers trace over his hand for a lingering moment. "I really must go" she sighs, hating her words.

*

"You let me know if I need to beat him up, okay?" says Pietro in his mock-stern voice. "Nobody hurts my sister." That part is dead serious, even if he says it with a little quirk of a smile. "If you get in trouble, real trouble, please come back here. This is a safe haven. If we both can't be here, then I can go somewhere else." He takes the amulet and squeezes the package.

*

"I will come back if I need to" Wanda nods, "But you will stay with me. If I am in that much trouble, then I will need you by my side." She half-smiles at his desire to protect her. "Bobby already had a girlfriend" she shrugs, "It was my fault. Do not hurt him…much. We will talk again." That last is a promise she means. And though it hurts her to the core, now she has to pull away and disappear back into the big city.

*

No sooner is she out of sight, than Pietro is once again hit with a wave of nausea and a sharp headache. It's the only thing that stops him from chasing after her. He does remember taking the pictures, though. He finds the best one and sets it as his lock screen on his phone. He might forget her face as soon as he looks away from the picture, but at least he can see her whenever he wants. It will have to do for now.
