Fade In…

Fury's orders had been… terse. As usual. Sent to Agent's Coulson, May and Rookie Agents Pezzini and Manning. He'd been doing some thinking, clearly, and with fury, after the thinking comes the acting. And often the swearing. Either way the orders had been simple. His office. Now.

The man in the black coat and eyepatch is looking out his window when they arrive, door slightly ajar.

***

Melinda May arrives promptly, as is usual. She's managed to get a decent amount of sleep after that lab … mishap. No, she won't talk about it. She stands to one side and waits for the others to arrive.

***

Sara's been called to the chief's office before. Not this chief's office, but she's intimately familiar with the procedure, at least. So it shouldn't be a surprise that while she comes, she doesn't look particularly cheerful when she shows up. Hands in her jacket pockets, she takes a look around the office, wary.

***

Summoned to Fury's office? sheeit. Paul's had drill sergeants like Fury so knows what to expect. The summons said now. He did his best to be there before that. "Agent Manning reporting as ordered, Sir."

***

"Agent Coulson got delayed I take it?" The man says still looking out the window. "Fine, we'll do this without him. All of you come in. Find a seat." He doesn't say get comfortable. Don't. This is Fury's office. Comfort is not a thing to be shared with other people in this office. It's supposed to be intimidating. "Agents, the world is getting weirder. Started with Agent May there running into some damn odd folks out there. Then the Triskelion got attacked and my office got torn up by demons. Then the whole city of Metropolis got shoved into some kind of dimensional space and swapped out with a world where everything had gone Hail HYDRA." He finally turns to look at them.

"Point is, we brought you two on, Manning and Pezzini, to deal with the weird stuff. And I think it's high time our organization started to reflect the realities on the ground."

***

Sara quirks a brow at the Director's words, glancing over to Paul. This is unusual. No one's yelling at her yet. Probably best to let that trend continue. So she doesn't respond, though the whole taking a seat thing isn't exactly happening, either.

***

Paul takes a seat as instructed and keeps an eye on Fury. He nods slightly at the opening. He knows all about weird stuff; it's what happens when you spend enough time around Sara. It's her fault and it's contagious. And if the Rapture wasn't enough, now there's the pendant as well to get them into trouble and call them away in the middle of a shift. Fun times. He continues to look attentive.

***

"Clear the way!" Flash's voice gets the halls a few floors below Fury's office at least somewhat clear as he beats feet down the way. Wearing the SHIELD fatigues of an Agent Recruit and looking a bit harried, he is hustling it along the corridor, heading towards the elevators. He's late. He knows it. Not a good foot forward, Thompson.
Sure one of the officers who passed the message on told him something along the lines of he should check out the Ammunition Recovery Room, only for him to realize after a frenetic search and check of the directory after running around for a good ten minutes… that there was no such room.
So he's late. Crap. The elevator's coming, but it's too slow. Abruptly he breaks into the stairwell, shouldering open the door and suddenly a black amorphous mass slides over his arms, a few weblines firing upwards as he _yanks_ himself straight up several flights quickly, the cameras probably getting an eyefull. He flips at the last railing, lands, the black suit fading as he shoulders open that door and beats feet…
And ends up at Fury's door. A moment is taken. Composure. Calm. The door is knocked on and with clearance… he enters.
"I was called in, sir?"

***

Melinda May is also very much tempted to NOT take a seat, but does so because Fury said to. And then Thompson arrives late. Not a good impression there, kid. She doesn't say that aloud, though, just keeps her attention on the Director.

***

"You were Thompson. Take a seat." Fury says calmly. "We're getting too slow. We need to be able to react faster to threats on the ground. Weird ones. So, effective immediately, assigning you both to WAND as full field agents. May will see to the paperwork."

The cyclopean gaze now turns on May. "You, agent, seem to have a bad habit. A habit of getting caught up in weird shit. I could name a dozen instances but it seems to gravitate to you and against all odds, you seem to deal pretty damn well with it. So, I am relieving you of your regular workload effective immediately and making you the senior agent in charge of WAND. You'll report to me. That'll keep the lines nice and clean. Pezzini, Manning, you report to her."

He considers for a moment. "Tell Fitz he's going to be Sci-Tech support for you on that project. And tell him he's cleared to collaborate with his little lab buddy on any thing he needs. Now…" As for Thompson… Fury grins. Just a bit.

"Thompson, Agent May will be handling your transition from Agent-Cadet to Rookie Agent. There's a lot you need to be brought up to speed on. You'll work through her. May, in addition to Thompson and WAND I want you to take over coordination of our Contract Agents. I don't want my Deputy Director to have to deal with them. She has enough on her plate. And you seem to handle them well enough, if our test case is any indication."

***

So, wait. There's not going to be any yelling? Sara, for some reason, looks suspicious. Like she's waiting for the other shoe to drop. Because no one's yelled at her yet. "WAND?" she echoes. "I'm going to assume that's a supernatural division, then."

***

Paul looks over to Sara, one brow raised in inquiry, to see what she thinks about this. And if she has any idea what Fury is talking about. He glances at May then looks back to Fury. "WAND, Sir?" There's some obvious inference from context but it would still be nice to have it clarified.

***

For Flash's part he steps around and takes a seat beside Agent May and settles down, though looking a bit tense to be at such ease in front of Director Fury. His only answer to the apparent transfer is, "Sir." Acknowledgement and agreement as he looks across the way at the head of SHIELD.

***

Melinda May looks at the others and explains shortly, like usual. "Wizards, Alchemy, and Necromancy Division." She turns back toward Fury. "I had heard that this new division would be coming up soon, I didn't realize it would be this soon." She doesn't sound opposed, though.

***

"Necessity is the mother of invention." Fury says simply. "Now, given Coulson's work on the Index, you'll also have to work closely with him to assess threats and keep assets properly catalogued and profiled. Any questions?" He looks around at the four people in the room. He just dumped a lot on them: May, Pezzini and Manning are now a team - possibly one that will grow - and they'll have some working out of things to do. Thompson… is in for a whole new world of field ops.

***

"Of course that's what it stands for." There's a faint twitch at one corner of Sara's lips, dry, as May spells out the acronym. She sets her hands on the back of a chair, working it through her mind. "Do we get an intern or something for paperwork?" No harm in asking, right?

***

WAND. Well, that makes sense. How utterly surprising. Sense is not what he's come to expect from bureaucracies, be they civil, military, or governmental. He looks over at Sara and nods then over to Thompson, wondering what his schtick is. "No, Sir. No questions." Though a trained monkey for paperwork would be wonderful.

***

Looking at Fury, Agent Thompson gives a nod. "Sir." He perhaps feels that more might need to be said so he adds calmly. "If that's where you need me, that's where I'll be." Yah he's still in the honeymoon period of the whole SHIELD thing, but it beats the whole Army deal with bombs in the head.

***

Melinda May nods to Fury, then glances at Thompson. She doesn't say anything to the former Army corporal right this moment, though. She'll make that step one of Fitz's new duties.

***

"I just assigned your Division Head a brand new rookie in need of full field training, didn't I?" Fury quirks an eyebrow. Translation: Do what all large organizations do in these situations. Make the new guy do it. Sorry Thompson. Honeymoon might be ending. "Well if that's it, you all have work to do and so do I." Beat. "Get to it people."

***

Sara looks over toward Flash, amusement crossing her features. "Yes, sir," she replies simply, turning and heading back out toward the hall. Weird. No yelling. The world really is getting stranger.

***

Paul looks over to study Thompson. In need of full field training? He and Sara are just cadet agents but a large part of the training was not an issue. Will they need to teach him when to duck? He'll have to ask May later. "Yes, Sir." he responds as he stands and prepares to leave with the others.

***

Unphased by the declaration of his role, Flash gives a nod and then gains his feet. He snaps a short precise salute, then steps back and around allowing the other people to precede him when they start to make their way out of the office. For now he keeps his counsel to himself, since really… he has no idea what this WAND thing really is, what his role will be in it. Hopefully it'll be in the same building, he just started getting used to the Triskelion.

***

Melinda May nods to Fury and stands, leaving Fury's office with everyone else. Once they're safely away from the Director's office she stops and looks at the others. "Thompson, starting tomorrow, you're going to start working on all of the field certifications. Manning or Pezzini can help you prioritize them. Also, I'll need all three of you to speak with Fitz. If you're not on the Index already you need to be, for your own protection."

***

"I sort of figured I was, since it's not like I've been keeping this a secret since I joined up," Sara says with a quirk of her brow at May. "Though I'm interested to hear how that's for my own protection."

***

"If you tell me what the Index is, I might have an idea of whether I'm on it or not." Paul says once he gets into the hall and the door to Fury's office closes behind them. "As for certifications, ducking is a good place to start. What training have you had, Thompson?"

***

Thompson follows along after the trio, and when May speaks to him he gives her a short precise nod and replies, "Ma'am." He does look a touch pensive as he moves down the hall with them, his gait somewhat steady.
Then Manning speaks to him and he looks over. "I was in the United States Army, sir. Corporal. Served two tours in Iraq, then came back stateside." That's definitely a cliffnotes version, skipping some important bits of intel like the loss of limbs, Project Rebirth, and the recent craziness with SHIELD helping him get out from the Army's thumb. But perhaps that's for later.

***

"The Index is a catalog of powered people and a detailing of their unique capabilities." May explains to Paul, and then elaborates for Sara. "If at some point, some dark-haired woman in archaic-looking armor with a sword starts tearing through Midtown Manhattan, being able to distinguish Pezzini from that woman could be the difference between being able to help stop her and getting thrown in a holding cell." May clearly has THOUGHTS on the matter, even if this example was overly simplified.

***

"Ah. Army." Paul says, in the way a marine would. Still, two tours over there is respectable. "Okay, Index. Though like Sara, I assume I'm already in it." Wait. The three of them? So Thompson has his own secrets. Which makes sense given his assignment.

***

Sara doesn't look particularly convinced about that reasoning, but there isn't much to be gained from arguing about it. SHIELD has her info, whether she likes the idea of an index or not.

***

A nod is given, "Yessir." Flash keeps walking with them. He does look like one of those recruits fresh out of school from somewhere, but there's a bit of something to him that at least might hint tha he's seen some crazy in his time. Could be the slight distance in his gaze, or the unflappable confidence. Whatever it is, he keeps moving with them. "When I need to test out on the certs let me know, I'm ready." He seems to feel like he could do it right now, heck.

***

"Start testing out tomorrow, Thompson," May says promptly. "Like Fury said, things are getting weirder, and the faster we're prepared, the better." She looks to each of them briefly. "Dismissed."
