Biography
Former 'Goddess'. Former Valkyrior. Former Hero. There's a lot of 'formers' that go into the woman known as Syn. Born Stynfríðr, trained as a warrior, chosen by Odin to be among the Valkyrior. Selectors of the worthy. Guardians of paradise. Once known as the Goddess of Barriers, Syn's magical talent was always powerful in strength and highly narrow in focus. While not as strong as Sif or Brunnhilde, once her name was as (in)famous among mortals as a guardian of Valhalla, arbiter of a warriors worthiness to enter the paradise of Valhalla.
A thousand years after the pact with the Celestials the resentment of being barred from claiming the worthy souls among the fallen of the Nine Realms has not faded for Syn. That her name is all but forgotten and her duty long since stripped from her is a bitterness frequently assuaged by fighting and drinking… not necessarily in that order.
Syn's crime was defiance. Defiance of Odin himself, refusal to bow to the pact forged with the Celestials… a resentment shared by many of her 'sisters'. However, when Syn crossed the line by endeavoring to cross the Realms, she was stripped of her status of a Valkyrior. Of her ability to transverse the Realms and her winged steed. Left without purpose far from Asgard as punishment for her actions, she has since eked out a living as a mercenary, working her way back towards Asgardia.
Character Details
Arrogant. Short-tempered. Violent. Mercurial. Catch her on a good day and she's everyone's friend. Catch her on a bad day or say the wrong thing and she's got no qualms 'demonstrating' her general superiority. She's a judgmental bitch that's quick to point out the flaws of others while adamantly ignoring any of her own.
Allspeak |
Syn is an Asgardian, and as most of her kind possesses the ability to speak any language within the Nine Realms fluently, and to be understood in the local tongue. |
Asgardian Physiology |
Born to Asgard, as most of her kind Syn is possessed of certain natural traits that can seem quite godly in nature. These include:
Superhuman Strength: A former Valkyior, Syn is stronger than your average Asgardian, to the tune of approximately 40 tonnes. Do you even lift, bro?
Superhuman Speed: While not likely to beat a speedster in a footrace any time in the near future, Syn is faster than human peak by a good margin.
Superhuman Stamina: Drink all day and still show up to work in a condition to perform? Of course. Push herself for a couple of days without food or rest and not be dead on her feet? No problem. With a heightened healing factor, resistance to most ailments and literally hundreds of years in Valhalla under her belt, Syn's stamina certainly counts as 'aggravatingly superhuman'. If this wasn't annoying enough on its own, being physically denser than most flesh-based entities means that she has the kind of durability to made her bullet and blade resistant.
She's a Brick House: Not literally, of course. But for all her relatively lean appearance, due to the aforementioned physical density Syn weighs far more than her height or appearance would suggest to be 'normal'. |
Valkyrie Training |
Though Syn is Valkyrior no longer, she once stood amongst the fabled female warrioress' of Asgard. Battle is the calling of her blood, and her skill with most kinds of weapons second only to Sif and Brunnhilde. As most of the Valkyrior she favors a blade, but is equally capable with axe, spear, knives and so forth. Modern weaponry, such as guns and grenades, are the exception to this. |
Deathsight |
As with the other Valkyrior, Syn possesses the ability to perceive supernatural phenomenon, especially that related to death. She can see ghosts, and perceives a glow about mortals that are soon to die. |
Goddess Of Barriers |
Stynfríðr, Syn, was once known as the Goddess of Barriers. Charged to guard the doors of Valhalla and bar the doors against those who are not to enter. A task aided by the mystical talent that saw her named to the Valkyrior. A location sealed by her will and blood will remain so as long as Syn is conscious or she chooses to dismantle it. |
Sword |
Hrím, although made of the Uru-metal as the Valkyrior's armor and weapons are by tradition, does not possess any inherant magical capabilities of its own. It is Syn's favored weapon since her time in Valhalla. |
Uru-armor |
Forged from star-metal and the leather, Syn's armor has largely been stripped and scraped of it's identifying marks over the centuries, but it's basic composition can never really be hidden from an Asgardian as that of a Valkyrior. Though its patina is darkened, metal smoothed from millenia of use and struck of its runes, it is still solidly made with the kind of attention to detail that is plain to those familiar with such armor. |
Friends In Low Places |
Syn doesn't so much have friends… as associates. Useful people. Need to find a job that doesn't ask a lot of questions? A guy who knows a guy that can probably get you a lift across the nine realms? Sure. It's never free, and it can't always be trusted to be safe, but fallen Valkyrior don't always get to be choosy about who they will deal with. |
Motorcycle |
A girl needs transport. And where winged horses can't travel, two-wheeled horsepower has to substitute. The long, chopper-style burdened with a large round shield, bulging panniers and complete with a 'holster' suitable for a sheathed longsword. It is hardly any more stealthy than its owner. |
Former Valkyrior |
While once Syn was capable of moving between the realms with little more than a thought, and possessed one of the winged horses of her station, these were stripped from her by Odin when she ceased to be a Valkyrie. It also means that to many Asgardians she is a disgrace. |
Limited Magic |
While Syn's capacity to 'guard the doors of the hall and shut them against those who are not to enter' is the talent that once made her memorable to the ancient Norse, and her ability to see impending death once marked her as a Valkyrior, this is the extent of any magical talent Syn possesses. The simplest cantrip, mildest curse, or most dubious blessing elude her outside of these talents. |
Full Metal Bitch |
Proud? Arrogant? Anger issues? Yeh. Syn's the poster child. Once one of the final arbiter's of whether a soul was worthy of entrance to Valhalla, she might have fallen far, but she's still a judgemental bitch. While what little notation of her has survived history notes her as 'appointed in defense', the clarification of 'of Valhalla' has fallen by the wayside in the intervening centuries since Syn last walked Aesheim. Those rare few who 'earn' her respect count her as a ferocious friend, but her disdain for the masses is poorly hidden and her temper easily provoked at challenge to her prowess. |
Hedonist |
Although it is coincidence that the Old Norse 'syn' matches the English 'sin' so closely… argument might be made that the connection comes in the form of Stynfríðr. More than just responsible for ferrying the souls of the worthy fallen to Valhalla, Syn lived in this Asgardian paradise for hundreds of mortal centuries prior to Odin's agreement with the Celestials. Drinking. Fighting. Indulging in whatever whims took her fancy. Shehe still drinks too much, and is too easily led astray by the promise of a good time. |
Deathsight |
The only thing worse than losing a good gig… is having to live with the constant reminder of the past. There's no 'off' switch for Syn's deathsight. That reflexive 'urge' to perform a service engrained in her over millenia doesn't come with a time out. Just that vague, empty-socket feeling of an itch that can never be scratched. All the aggravation of a phantom limb and none of the capacity to do a damned thing about it. Worse, still, is that it's not just triggered by those who meet the criterion of 'worthy', and so few are these days. |
