"Mischief is a small thing, a toy I've well used and discarded. This isn't mischief. This is mayhem. Just watch."

The tragic black sheep of the Asgardian royal line, known for his magnanimous magic as much as his harmless mischief. A loving brother who means well, loves a good story, and is happy to lend a helping hand. Just terribly misunderstood, maligned, and maltreated. Oh, and once tried to kill his brother and take the throne, but shhh. We don't talk about that.

The life of the God of Lies is one that was set with the precedent of his birth: born Loki Laufeyson in the cold and unforgiving realm of Jotunheim, unwanted and unloved by his parents, King Laufey and Queen Farbauti, rulers of the Frost Giants. Unusually small for a Giant, Loki was deemed a disgusting disappointment by his parents, who kept him hidden away from the rest of their kind, viewing him as a sign of weakness - a thing not to be tolerated.

Loki's life as scion of the Frost Giants was a short and abusive one, eventually and inevitably leading to his abandonment in the harsh and desolate landscape of Jotunheim by his father, left to fend for himself - or, preferably, perish.

And perish Loki surely would have, if not for the almost fated intervention of a proud old god looking to repay a debt. Odin Borson, God of Gods, the All-Father himself, came across the child of Laufey during the war between Asgard and Jotunheim. Seeing this small Frost Giant, so battered by the elements and yet still tenaciously clinging to life, Odin was struck with an idea: he took the boy and adopted him, intent perhaps to use him as a bridge between the Asgardians and the Frost Giants. Or perhaps just to prove that the great Odin All-Father could take even the drecks of another world and elevate them to godhood. Either way.

So was born Loki Odinson, prince of Asgard and adoptive brother of the heir to the Realm of Gods, Thor Odinson. Despite their very different origins, Thor and Loki became swift and inseparable companions, engaging in many an adventure with their ever-stalwart friend the Lady Sif. And perhaps it might well have stayed that way. Perhaps Loki would have become the plucky sidekick of Thor, ever his faithful supporter and no more. If only it was in Loki's nature to accept such a humble station.

But the tinder for his burning was built up long before. Feeling like an outsider, like someone who didn't belong, for most of his life growing up in Asgard, the sparks of Loki's jealousy for his brother's good fortunes soon became an ever-growing pyre of envy. Thor, beloved by Asgardians, heir to the throne, favorite of Odin. And then there was Loki belittled for his natural affinity for magic and tricks instead of warfare and recklessness, jovially labeled the God of Mischief and Lies for his pranks and never acknowledged for much else. Loki, once more the perennial outsider in a role no different than his lot in Jotunheim: different, and unwanted.

So the fire burned. Tricks and mischief became mixed with schemes and manipulations. What started with simply things like the cutting of Sif's tragically golden hair only to replace it with locks as black as pitch evolved into creating monsters and maneuvering pieces all in an effort to defame and dethrone his beloved older brother. And he almost succeeded. Engineering a downfall using Thor's own reckless arrogance against him, Loki arranged for Thor to be exiled to Midgard and stripped of his power, arranged to succeed the throne after the All-Father fell into the Odin-Sleep - arranged for the Frost Giants to attempt an invasion to strike them down and use it as pretense to destroy their entire realm, to finally earn the respect he felt he deserved from his father, his brother, his mother.

And within an instant, it was all undone by Thor. Thor, who once more proved himself worthy. Thor, who became the beloved savior of the people once more by thwarting the vile and villainous Loki and his schemes. The Bifrost shattered, Loki, unwilling to accept the disapproval of his father and the offered salvation of his brother, cast himself into the void between realms. And so he has been missing since. Certainly gone forever, and not currently on Midgard, scheming against his brother for entirely understandable reasons.

Certainly not.

Character Details

Loki Odinson is everything his brother Thor is not, like two sides of a coin. Where Thor is reckless and direct, Loki is crafty and cautious. Where Thor revels in physical confrontations, Loki relies on magic and manipulation. Where Thor is ever honest and ever honorable, Loki is forever the liar and the underhanded.

This dichotomy and the envy Loki has ever felt because of it has largely defined both him and his motives. On the surface, Loki is charming and witty with a penchant for mischief that often skirts the boundaries of moral acceptability at the best of times. He is well-spoken and intelligent and many of the things he says are layered with several meanings.

But beneath all that, Loki lives in a world of contradictions and self-fulfilling prophecies. He has always felt like the outsider, yearning for the things Thor had that he never could. A desire for respect from his brother and father has warped into a need to prove his superiority in order to gain that respect, an intrinsic need to be the better ruler, the better son, the better brother, that has paradoxically doomed him to never be any of those despite all his qualifications.

At the end of the day, Loki is a complex, and multi-faceted individual, with as much of a penchant even now for simple mischief as he is for grandiose power games and political machinations. Just who Loki is depends entirely on the story he's telling at the time; he is the God of Lies, the God of Mischief, and the God of Evil all in one. Whether he can ever grow into something more than what his insecurities have made him, though, is another question entirely.
