"Why can't a girl be nice to a guy without the mook trying to murder her?"

"I'm rubber, you're glue, whatever you say bounces off me and makes a six-inch-diameter exit wound in you."

Whether she likes it or not, Harley Quinn left psychiatry, rose to infamy as a mercurial murderess, and seems to be doomed to be forever known as Joker's girl. She's been his right hand clown, his most ardent supporter, and tried to quit him more times than she can count.

Recently, she's tried to be a better person (sometimes), stand on her own (with mixed success), and carve her own place in the world (what does that even mean, anyway?). She's also been occasionally coerced into acts of heroism for self-preservation's sake as part of the Suicide Squad.

She's still crazy as hell and talks way too much.

She had a life before Him. Really, she did. It wasn’t great, but there was one.

Harleen Frances Quinzel wasn’t born a beloved child. The youngest of three, her small-time crook of a dad - when he wasn’t in jail - was the kind of drunk who expressed his “love” with his fists, his belt, or whatever else was handy. Harleen learned early on that the best plan was to keep out of his way as much as possible, and that meant a neurotic devotion to her studies and as much time after school with the gymnastics team as she could manage.

The times her daddy praised her, she felt like a princess, ready to conquer the world. That rare and precious feeling, however, was always fleeting. Most of the time, she felt mousy, small, and unremarkable.

Her grades and skill on the gym floor earned her a full ride scholarship to Gotham University. She graduated from high school a year early, and got away from Daddy Dearest. It was good.

In psychology, it’s said that people often enter the field to understand the stranger aspects of themselves and those closest to them. That was certainly true of Harleen. Extreme personalities fascinated her endlessly. She condensed a full undergrad, master’s, and doctoral coursework - as well as all of the supervised clinical hours - load into six years, and graduated at the top of her class with a PhD in Criminal Psychology. She was praised as a brilliant mind.

She still felt mousy, small, and unremarkable.

So she continued on in school, leveraging her existing degree as she went to pursue a second doctorate in Psychiatry.

She was elated when she landed the internship of a lifetime: Arkham Asylum in Gotham City. Three months into that internship, Dr. Quinzel was approved to begin patient interviews so that she could publish. Then… it all fell apart. Or, more accurately, she fell apart.

Because of Him.

The Joker made her feel special. Like a princess.

They’d talk as long as the guards permitted them about all sorts of things. He told her how she made him feel safe,“confided” the abusive similarities in his own upbringing. In time, she realized that she’d do anything for him. Anything he asked, she would do it.

So when he asked her to help him escape Arkham, she did. Repeatedly. Each time he came back, she loved him more. He’d tell her he had missed her. How there was no one in the world like her. Desperate to make the feeling last and fueled by the Joker’s toxic influence, she kept helping him as her own trauma and mental illness spiraled out of control.

She was discovered, and her license was revoked. They wanted to arrest her. Commit her. Evading authorities, she fled straight right into the arms of her beloved Mistah J and adopted a new name to match her paramour: Harley Quinn.

He pretended to love her while she was novel and new, and she so eager to please him. But he was - as so many men are, really - a workaholic and his dark work meant more than anything else. A means to an end, he just ignored her whenever she wasn’t of use.

Neglected, she became like a yappy dog that kept coming back when kicked. He came to like kicking it. Hurting her. Harley let him because it made him happy for short-lived moments and any of his attention - however it came - was better than none at all. She’d leave sometimes, usually after he tried to kill her, but she’d come back anytime he’d ask her to.

Meanwhile, Quinn tried to make friends among the criminally insane. She was a “small doses” kind of friend, but a “small doses” kind of friend was better than the “no doses” Joker kind of friend and so Harley slowly built a reputation as the more reasonable - if annoying - of the two.

Poison Ivy was different. She helped restore Harley’s desire for dignity during one of the many separations from Joker. Ivy also gave her a serum that protected Harley from the regular abuses and murder attempts that the Joker leveled at his girlfriend, making the harlequin stronger and immune to poison and toxins. Poison Ivy became her best - and often only - real friend.

Eventually, Joker tried to kill her one time too many. Harley had to walk away for her own sake.

When Amanda Waller found Quinn, she was locked up in Arkham after an attempt to rob a jewelry store. (Pro Tip: If you don’t want a break in, don’t put the good stuff in the window.)

A deal was struck. A job for a second chance. Harley accepted, and thus began her stint on the Suicide Squad, doing good under duress. While she’s done that fancy little sidejob, new lovers have passed through. New friends. A baby that she intends to never see again out of a twisted mother’s love.

But deep down, she wonders if she’s really ever going to be free of the Joker. If she’s ever been free of him. When she’s quiet long enough, it makes her doubt herself and her motivations more than ever. To be with him or never be with him again: she’s not really sure what scares her more.

So the best plan is to stay distracted and never be quiet. …She thinks she has that handled.

Wikipedia Entry: "Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as a personality disorder characterized by a pattern of excessive attention-seeking emotions, usually beginning in early adulthood, including inappropriately seductive behavior and an excessive need for approval."

Harley is a textbook example of HPD, if to an extreme presentation. But beneath deep emotional and physical scars from years of abuse starting in childhood and continuing through her adult years, there’s a great deal more to her. Fiercely loyal to those few she calls 'friend', she will often care far more for them than she does herself. (Mostly so she can feel better about herself; she’s no martyr or saint.) She also wanted to help people once upon a time. To understand them. This part of her can, on occasion, be reasoned with. In fact, she’s lucid far more often than she lets on.

…But she’s still incredibly volatile and prone to bouts of 'deadly.' So, uh, approach at your own risk.
