Matthew Murdock: A son of Hell's Kitchen who overcame disability and childhood tragedy to make good. A BA and JD from Columbia, law review, and prestigious clerkships. And after all of that, he turned down a lucrative job offer from a white shoe law firm to return to his roots and help his neighborhood. Clearly the man's a saint.

Daredevil: A masked vigilante who takes the law into his own hands, terrorizing those who, under the law, must be considered innocent until proven guilty. A shadow; a nightmare; a demon.

After an upset win defending James Buchanan Barnes in one of the highest-profile court cases of U.S. history, Matthew is a star is on the rise in the New York legal scene. Meanwhile, his alter ego is slowly building a quiet reputation as one of the city's more daring and brutally effective vigilantes — starting with helping to get a mysterious and incredibly dangerous designer drug off the streets in late '17.

Matthew Michael Murdock was born at Roosevelt Hospital in Hell's Kitchen, New York. Abandoned by his mother, he was raised with uncommon tenderness by his single father, middling boxer Battlin' Jack Murdock. Smart, tough, and diligent, Matthew was set to vault out of his neighborhood on to bigger and better things until his life was altered by two tragedies. The first was Matt's own — at the age of nine, he saved an elderly man from being struck by a truck, inadvertently causing a chemical spill that left him blinded while heightening his other senses to superhuman levels. The second tragedy was his father's — who one year later was so moved by his son's adoration that he flipped the script on a mob boss and won a fight he was supposed to throw. That choice cost Jack Murdock his life, and eventually put his son on the path to fighting injustice by any means necessary.

From a Catholic orphanage to Columbia, Matt persevered. He found a father figure in the blind martial arts master Stick, who taught him how to control the powers that threatened to overwhelm him — and to turn his body into a living weapon. Eventually, Matt's mentor left him when he grew a little too attached. Still, Matt studied hard, like his father always told him to, and excelled in college and at law school. There he found a friendship that lasted in one Foggy Nelson, and a few relationships that didn't. Eschewing theory in favor of clinical, hands on practice, Matt found he had a gift for the courtroom. But a series of clerkships and clinics reinforced his long-held belief that the justice system rarely lived up to its promises or principles.

That may be why, after graduating from law school with honors, Matt turned down the sort of job most 3Ls would kill for and returned to his roots in Hell's Kitchen. He set up a shingle with his friend Foggy, determined to defend the innocent and make the system work for those without means. At the same time, Matt began putting his martial training to use by night, donning a homespun costume with a simple black mask to protect his beleaguered and crime-infested neighborhood. Given the name "The Devil of Hell's Kitchen" by the organized crime outfits he crashed with, he was eventually dubbed "Daredevil" on the front page of the Daily Bugle after commandeering a moving tanker truck on the West Side Highway and saving the people imprisoned inside. For all the good he's done, however, crime and corruption prevail in the Kitchen. And the evidence is building that much of what plagues the neighborhood comes from a single, shadowy source.

Weeks after Daredevil won his moniker, Matt and Foggy found themselves in the middle of the biggest court case of his generation. Nelson & Murdock successfully defended James Buchanan Barnes in the "Trial of Two Centuries," besting veteran U.S. attorney David Archer and foiling the plans of at least half a dozen countries bent on bringing the infamous "Winter Soldier" to justice.

**NOTE: Matt was rebooted in Dec. 2016. The current version is largely based on the MCU, though some elements have been drawn from the comics.

Character Details

Matt is a walking contradiction. He's driven by bottomless grief, raging abandonment issues, and worlds of guilt — but rigidly clings to abstract moral principles and disciplines. He's a loner hungry for human connection. He has an outsized death wish, but fights like hell each night to survive another day. He's the poster-child for people with disabilities, but isn't actually disabled. He's the "man without fear" who is terrified of letting the world, his dead father, God, and himself down.

In short, he's a mess. But in his public life Matt displays a rare degree of charm, dignity, and composure, all leavened by a wry and self-effacing wit. In this respect, and others, he models the con artists and crooks he regularly beats to a fare thee well.

Image Name Summary Information
xFTnj9L.jpg Foggy Nelson Avocado at Law Matt's law partner, best friend since freshman year of college, and closest thing he has to family. Foggy is a lovable goof whose soft exterior hides a spine of steel. Matt lies to him constantly, and would do nearly anything for him.
ypv9u86.png Stick Mentor/Asshole The caustic blind martial arts master Stick found Matt in a Catholic orphanage just a few months after Jack Murdock's death. He taught the blind boy how to use his gifts and turn his body into a living weapon. Stick's abrupt departure gutted him, but the lessons stuck.
EPv8fRG.jpg Dr. Jane Foster Friend The scientist took a wrong turn in his neighborhood, kicking off a friendship that would eventually transcend his dual identities. Recently, things she did while under a bad influence have complicated that friendship.
cd4HoCD.jpg Bucky Barnes Friend Matt spent nearly half a year protecting James "Bucky" Barnes with both sides of his bifurcated life. But after the old soldier's latest battle with mind control affected Matt personally, it's too soon to say where they'll land.
2TYyJAN.jpg Kinsey Sheridan Person of Interest They met at a crime scene. He was hunting for the thief, while she was covering her tracks. A stop-and-start affair followed, punctuated by uncomfortable revelations about their double lives and differing roles - right up until one crisis-of-the-week underscored just how much they'd come to mean to each other. Hard, but worth it.
8RmmMnm.jpg Wilson Fisk White Whale He is the hidden orchestrator of pain and devastation in Hell's Kitchen and beyond, the mastermind behind schemes ranging from human trafficking to metahuman designer drugs. But now, after nearly a year of pursuit, Matt has the one thing that could finally undo him: his name.
KH7XnDk.jpg Jessica Jones His Hero The Hell's Kitchen duo has navigated killer aliens, evil wizards, and some complicated emotional terrain — made all the more so by the fact that she's now one of a handful of people who know his secret. Things may have gotten messy, but to say he cares about her is an understatement.
lukecage.jpg Luke Cage Friend/Client Matt has seen the bar owner and escaped convict weather physical and psychological blows that would bring down almost any other man, and still keep going.
LHawQzF.jpg Danny Rand Billionaire Danny is the derpiest enigma ever. A hapless billionaire who nevertheless knows how to fight at least as well as Matt does, and who managed to sabotage Wilson Fisk's secret pharma operation with a few pen strokes. Who is this guy?
fs6vnp4.jpg Elektra Natchios Ex-girlfriend She's the one that got away. Twice. Of course, the second time was after she tried to kill him and one of his friends.
oBye2PE.jpg Zatanna Zatara Lifesaver Most flamboyant goth girls are all talk, but she has the goods — and used them to save his life on multiple occasions. He's deeply grateful, but all her talk about Heaven and Hell rattle the Catholic boy more than he'd like to admit.
C0WO1yB.png Agent Coulson Contact Matt is instinctively skeptical of law enforcement and the security state, but SHIELD's Agent Coulson is one of the few 'establishment' figures that he actually trusts. The vigilante and the spook have now collaborated together on several projects related to the Barnes trial and the seedy dealings of Wilson Fisk.
cBSQ0a9.jpg T'Challa King of Wakanda Just days after Matt and Foggy delivered a not-guilty verdict for James Barnes, T'Challa kidnapped the former Winter Soldier off the streets of Brooklyn to stand judgment in Wakanda. Matt spent the next six weeks trying to free James AGAIN, and lost his Daredevil costume in the doing. He might still be sore about it.
FSG0wNR.jpg Owen Mercer Complication Bartender, addict, friend of Luke Cage — and someone who has seen more than he should have. Seems like a decent sort, but it's too soon to say.
b0ngyAZ.jpg Azalea Kingston Literal Devil Child Talk about one person screwing up another person's entire frickin' day.
elJASis.jpg Stephanie Brown Intern Nelson & Murdock's first (and only) law clerk, Gotham U student Stephanie Brown has an interesting past that resonates with Matt's own. And like Matt, there's more to her than meets the eye.
WnEWgga.png Trish Walker Celeb Acquaintance Trish Walker was a TV star back when Matt Murdock still had working eyes, and became a radio host after he lost them. Of course she's his celebrity crush. He got to save her life, and she even fan-girled on him. She provided valuable assists in both his pursuit of Mr. F and his defense of Bucky Barnes, but has since traded the Tri-City crazy for quiet DC. Smart girl.
Kitty_001-00000000.jpg Kitty Jessica's friend Kitty Pride tried to play cupid between Matt and her friend Jess, and it ended badly. He was pretty sore about it at the time, but he respects her loyalty. And her katana. Cool dragon, too.
TBIwFVa.jpg Peggy Carter Witness Matt met Peggy during the Winter Soldier trial, and came away impressed by her pragmatism, dry wit, and stiff upper lip.
ltXKlLK.jpg Steve Rogers Witness Matt was always too cynical about institutions — including and perhaps especially his country — to ever indulge in hero worship for Captain America. When they met, they didn't see eye to eye on the Winter Soldier case, and Matt was admittedly frustrated by Steve's rectitude. But together they still managed to put a U.S. attorney on his heels, and Matt walked away admiring the man.
