Biography

  • Kauzmi is adopted into a fairly modern couple. Her fathers are a computer programmer and a fashion photographer. From them, Kazumi learns to love both technology and art. Better yet, she quickly develops an ability to meld the two together.
  • Kazumi wins the regional middle school science fair by creating a database which catalogs a person's entire wardrobe and fashion product inventory and then makes suggestions on how to put them together to create fashionable effect.
  • Kazumi graduates from high school. She is accepted and attends NC State where, during her second semester, she rushes Alpha Omega Epsilon, a professional and social sorority dedicated to woman in STEM fields. While pleding she meets her future best friend and partner, Andrea McKillip.
  • In her sophomore year, Kazumi moves into the AOE sorority house and ends up rooming with Andie. Things quickly go south, however, when the tech crash forces one of her fathers out of work. Faced with the prospect of not being able to afford to finish school, Kazumi works to develop her middle school project into a mobile app. The app, called Butterfly Kiss, scans someone's face and then makes recommendations based on skin type, facial structure, and wardrobe choices. To bolster the app, Kazumi begins making videos demonstrating the makeup techniques Butterfly Kiss recommends.
  • Kazumi's app is successful but her videos are even more successful. She becomes a minor YouTube celebrity and eventually expands her videos into other topics, including clothing and eventually cosplay. Kazumi is able to earn enough money between the app and her YouTube channel to finish college and pay for grad school.
  • Kazumi enters grad school, moving off campus to live with Andie in a student apartment. She earns a PhD in computer sciences and continues to build her brand, getting into cosplay as the ultimate expression of fashion and engineering combined.
  • After earning her masters, Kazumi departs for Paris for an internship in the fashion world. She and Andie stay in touch, eventually developing the concept of Butterfly Wings, a "smart makeup" based on technology similar to that of eInk.
  • After Kazumi's internship ends she returns to the United States and moves in with newly minted Doctor Andrea McKillip. Kazumi has discovered she prefers working for herself and focuses on her app and video business. Together she and Andie develop a working prototype of Butterfly Wings. Knowing they need capital to take the product to market, they use the prototype to crowdfund it and draw in over a million dollars. This attracts additional investors, including one who attaches one string to her investment: the newly minted Everywoman Technologies must set up shop in New York City.
  • Disaster almost strikes. While Butterfly Wings is in the early stages of mass production, both Andie and Kazumi are exposed to the Mists. Both turn out to be NuHumans and are out of commission long enough a breakdown in communication occurs.
  • Kazumi emerged from her cocoon with telekinetic powers and color changing skin. Disoriented by the changes, she focuses on Butterfly Wings to anchor her to reality and gets things back on track. It takes another month before she works up the courage to make another YouTube video during which she reveals what happened to her. Fortunately, most of her subscribers seem to think its cool.
  • Butterfly Wings makes it to market and is an instant success. Projections suggest the product will begin making money by the end of the upcoming holiday season.

Character Details

Kazumi was raised to be proud, open, and accepting. As a LGBT woman of color raised by two men who couldn't get married until after she was born, she's fully aware of how the world is often stacked against her. She accepts the challenge and relishes it, striding forward with energy and confidence. Because, as she'll be glad to tell anyone, if you don't seem confident you won't feel confident.

Kazumi works hard but she also plays hard. She loves to enjoy herself and can be something of a hedonist. Whatever she does, she throws herself into it. She'll lose herself in someone's eyes but also spend hours upon hours in her workshop working out how a new fabrication unit works or debugging code.
